Scottish Independence

The Scots vote this week to decide if they wish to remain a member of the 300 yr old UK or if they should become an independent nation. There are many pros and cons for staying and leaving and if anyone has followed the news ( on this topic) you know the last few weeks have seen the margins narrowing. What do you all think?

Don't know a whole lot but from what I understand, the Scottish seats in parliament are mostly held by progressives so this might move the UK to the right if it passes.

You should try showing more restraint here.

I thought this was about free Scotch. If so, I'm in.

Seems to me this would let anti-EU parties in the UK have more power and influence. And I like anything that undermines the EU. I hate centralized, internationalist governing organizations.

Our official stance as a nation is that everyone has the right of self determination... (when it comes to weakening our enemies) But since this is our ally, I wonder what the WH has to say about this. Surprised that the Grand Orator hasn't spoken on this.
I fully support and independent Scotland. Just as much as I support and independent Kurdistan.

Why would I do that?

I'm stockpiling Scotch tape to hedge against the inevitable runaway prices after this all goes down.

The UK flag would certainly be different, though, if they need to get rid of the Scottish St Andrews Cross from it.

It's up to the Scots. Why should I care?

I fully support it as well, there are many issues with Scotlands share of the UK debt that seem to be a big issue, but the main point that I've hard over and over from the UK is that, the Union is better together. Parliament has gone as far as saying if the Scots vote "No" then they'll be given a bit more autonomy. That sounds like a bribe to me, but it may sway enough people. Scotland wouldn't be able to use the pound, England will make sure of that.
300 yrs ago, the Union made sense but not so much today.

If Scotland leaves, then would it still be the UK? The Union of 1707 which joined England and Scotland into a union referred to as a "United Kingdom of Great Britain and the United Kingdom." would be null.

If Scotland leaves, then it's not a United Kingdom anymore.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland would still be left.

I think i'm right.
Scotland is set for a referendum on independence. More than likely it will take place in the autumn of 2014, meaning that the United Kingdom could be dissolved in 2015. This would end the union which was formed in 1707 and result in an independent Scotland and what is being called the RUK—or Residual United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It will still be the UK - the UK does include Wales and Northern Ireland, as established by the Acts of Union in 1800 that changed the title to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Great Britain will now just mean England and Wales.

Said this in an earlier thread...hope Scotland breaks free.
Only FEAR would keep them a part of the British Empire...but we all know that FEAR is used very effectively by those in power.
ISIS, anyone?
C'mon Scotland...do the right thing.

I quoted gObomba in an eralier thread...he said something earlier this year that was similar to, "people can't just vote to change a nation's borders."
Of course, our uninformed Dope In Charge was referring to Crimea.
