President Obama to Sign Executive Order on Stem Cell Researc

ABC News has learned that on Monday morning President Obama will hold an event at the White House in which he signs an executive order overturning the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

The announcement will be about "restoring scientific integrity to health care policy," an administration official tells ABC News.

In August 2001, President George W. Bush signed an executive order banning federal funding on embryonic stem cell research except for a few dozen lines that were grandfathered in. The White House at the time estimated scientists would have more than 60 cell lines to use, but ultimately fewer than two dozen lines were usable.

Twice during his presidency, Mr. Bush vetoed efforts to overturn his ban.

I have neither the fight nor the desire to fight in me anymore.........

That being said, I don't agree, yet, like abortion issues, it all should come down to personal choice. A choice that that one individual and his/her higher power should only be involved in. Obama disappoints me, not so much in this, but the fact that he, like every other politician, has once again shown himself to be a liar and a fraud. He promised "change" simply to win votes and to FINALLY get the majority of the black populace to have somebody to vote for.

He is doing nothing more than any other cheap suit in DC has done over the years. He was NEVER gonna bring about TRUE change. Not like King George did either. I now worry only about what effects me. I know that sounds selfish and as a Christian(not the best one I assure you) I have an obligation to fight for the unborn and innocent as well as the hurting human being as well. But it's tough, somedays, it's just tough.

I wish Mr. Obama well in his term as POTUS but I will never support him, I will never acknowledge him and I will do all that is within me to simply ignore him. He, and all Washington cronie, be they "conservative" or "liberal" are not worth my time to me anymore. They care NOTHING for you or I. Don't be deceived.

Barrack Hussein Obama, take luck with you. You had neither my vote nor do you hear my voice and I have turned a deaf ear. Peace to you all this evening.

Catman, I understand your frustration but to expect President Obama to fix the economy, end/win two wars, fix the world economy and change Washington politics and reform government and fix all the corruption, mistakes and ineptitude of the Bush administration in 2 months is asking a bit too much, to put it mildly. In fact it's quite immature.

Have a little patience, focus on the things you need to do to make it, and give Obama at least a couple years. Life is too short.

Think of the this big mess like an old ocean supertanker headed straight for an iceberg - the iceberg's been spotted and the rudder has been turned, but it's going to take 10 or 15 miles for the big boat to actually make the turn to avoid disaster.

True, but as an Independent, I don't support him but, as stated, I no longer care. I am looking out for me as it regards to what makes ME happy and that includes my religious, work, and personal lives. I have to take time for me. You would TRULY be surprised to know what step one of that process is. Take care friend.

Alright, time for my penny stock in Stem Cell companies to start rising(hopefully)! A buddy of mine sunk $800 into a company and recieved 30,500 shares, now it's worth $3,350. COME ON BIG MONEY!

As an AMERICAN you should support your leader. Stem Cells could help save people and end horrible illness'. If the possibility was there, why not try? I'm for abortion(that is until you start tearing the child apart inside the womb) but if these cells could be used to benefit humanity, why not?! Obama has inheirted a mess and we can not expect everything to be peachy in a matter of months.

This is truly great news. And stem cells needed for research don;t have to come from aborted fetuses. Do more research before you use that argument. Stem cell research is the medical future and the US is fallen way behind.

As somebody who would hate to see embryos destroyed, the thought has always ran through my mind, how much suffering and paid could we end if this were properly and ethically pursued. I love all of God's creatures, but I wonder why this great affection for the unborn and to hell with those living seems to be the norm in some religious circles? Yes, that's ME asking that.

I am really working hard to become a better, less bitter person and so far, today has been a great day. God bless and peace!

catman - as a Catholic this one had left me conflicted. until a friend in the bioscience field reminded me that fertility clinics discard thousands of embryos a year as "medical waste"... it was at that point that I decided that if their existence was going to end as "medical waste", then it would derive great benefit to the living that this research be pursued.

Hurray! More federal money for a wild-goose-chase scientific venture from which innovations (if any are made at all) will most likely only be affordable by wealthy individuals.

Where is the money coming from to start up this new federal funding? Will it come from existing funds (taking from other expenditures) or China? That's my big question. It's not like harvesting and researching stem cells from embryos has been outlawed, just not funded by the federal government. I'm sure the amount of money is miniscule in the grand scheme of things, but it's just more debt unless something is cut to pay for this.

most federal stem cell funding will be done in the form NIH grants to universities to continue or expand their research. that money will likely come out of the rest of the NIH budget at this point.

Is there a chance that that money could be put to a better use...like less borrowing from China?
