The Forgotten Slaves

Interesting article one of my FB friends posted, and another reason to punch people wearing orange on St. Patricks Day  ...
They came as slaves: human cargo transported on British ships bound for the Americas. They were shipped by the hundreds of thousands and included men, women, and even the youngest of children.

Whenever they rebelled or even disobeyed an order, they were punished in the harshest ways. Slave owners would hang their human property by their hands and set their hands or feet on fire as one form of punishment. Some were burned alive and had their heads placed on pikes in the marketplace as a warning to other captives.

We don’t really need to go through all of the gory details, do we? We know all too well the atrocities of the African slave trade.

But are we talking about African slavery? King James VI and Charles I also led a continued effort to enslave the Irish. Britain’s Oliver Cromwell furthered this practice of dehumanizing one’s next door neighbour.

The Irish slave trade began when James VI sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies.

By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.

Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.

From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade.

The Irish built, and then filled, the prisons. You gotta respect 'em for that.

The English Protestants enslaved the Irish Catholics. The orange in the flag of Ireland represents the Protestants, the green the Catholics.
Fuck em!

Religion was the tool, or the instrument used. The root cause was people (in this case the English) wanting to exert power over other people (in this case the Irish). Just another example fo the cancerous effects of the worst of human nature. :thumb:

Yep. Even in my lifetime, people were killing each other in the streets of Belfast for having a slightly different take on the same fairy tale. But yeah, religion has nothing to do with it. :thumb:

Oh, I'm sorry, where did I say that religion had nothing to do with it? Just point me to the post and I will gladly remove it. What's that? I didn't say that? That's odd, because you seem to have jumped to that conclusion rather quickly. Here, since apparently you didn't read it, I'll post it again, with commentary:

Religion was the tool, or the instrument used (ed: see, right there, that's me, the author, saying that religion had something to do with it. Not sure how you missed the very first sentence, but hey, I don't want to judge). The root cause was people (in this case the English) wanting to exert power over other people (in this case the Irish) (ed: now here, in this case, I dive down further than your cursory, agenda-driven conclusion, and provide more analysis that actually sheds light on the subject, rather than just the catch-line you were going for). Just another example fo the cancerous effects of the worst of human nature (ed. And here, I just snarkily re-use your ending statement and update it to be accurate).

You're welcome. :thumb:

Well shoot! It's too bad America isn't a Christian theocracy, then we could use religion to "bring out the worst in our nature" and carry out JSO's fantasy of wiping a billion and a half Muslims out of existence. Oh well, one can dream.

Okay, so we both agree that humans, by nature, are capable of violence and general shitty behavior towards each other.

Then religion came along and gave us a whole new, very powerful vehicle through which we could carry out said behavior. This would be the cancerous effect of religion that I was referring to. You can argue that religion has been a net benefit to humanity, but you could also argue that automatic weapons have been, too. :coffee:
