Social Constructs and Identity

Post by JohnStOnge »

I know we already have a thread about that sick White woman who has been pretending to be Black but there's an issue associated with it that I've noticed. That is that most of the people I've seen talking about it on TV, when asked the question, think that her pretending to be Black is "bad" while somebody like Bruce Jenner pretending to be a woman is "good." It's just not the same, they say.

Yet we are told that race is just a "social construct." It's not even real. You know what? Biological sex is not a social construct.

Don't get me wrong. I think the idea that race is a social construct is absurd. But it's not, particularly given the fact that the lines can and have been blurred through interbreeding, as distinct a separation as biological sex is. You're not being consistent if you say that it's just great and courageous for Bruce Jenner to pretend to be a woman because that's "who he is" but say that it's wrong for this Rachel Dolezal woman to pretend to be Black because that's "who she is" in her own mind.

If you're in the "Jenner is courageous" camp you should also be in the "Dolezal is courageous" camp.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

The doctrine of PC has been weaving a pretty tangled web and it's only getting even more tangled. That's pretty much the TL;DR version of JSO's post.

Remember when Larry Summers created a crap storm suggesting the way men tend to be wired as a reason for men being more successful in science? We are supposed to believe that stereotypes and not brains affect general interests and aptitudes and behaviors of the sexes yet now we are being told that sex isn't just primary and secondary sex characteristics, but that sex is also an immutable characteristic of the brain as well.

The mixing of secularism with PC makes things even more complicated. It takes some real mental gymnastics to be able to believe in Godless evolution while believing it makes sense for men and women to be cognitive equivalents rather than have brain power concentrated in different places so that they are complements. BTW, I very much enjoy the fights on the internet between the liberal, feminist, social justice atheists like PZ Myers and the less PC Dawkins-Hitchens-esque atheists.

Transracial will eventually become as accepted as transgender has become. It's only a matter of time. Those who are arguing against it are simply on the wrong side of history. Bigots. 100 years from now people will look back at our hatred towards the transracial community and wonder why we were so hateful.

The word that she should use non stop form here on out is trans-racial. If she was smart she'd beat that term into the public's memory

:? I suppose. Frankly I don't get why either one has received more than thirty seconds of media coverage. Hard to think of two more insignificant issues.

I'm not so sure about that. Race relations is a big issue and this has cast an interesting light on it IMO and could provoke some great discussion.

So the gist of this is you can be what you wat to be. Doesn't matter what race you were born with.
-If you want to be wihte, you can be white.
-If you want to be black, you can be black.
-If you want to be asian, you can be asian..

I'm not understanding what the issue is? "Filipino" is cultural...while Malay is the race (calling this transracial seems a stretch). And people enjoy and buy into different cultural archtypes all the time. What's the difference between this and someone buying into the cowboy culture, or nerd culture, or Latin culture, or Japanophile culture?

The beauty of this country is you can be whatever the fuck you want as long as you don't hurt anyone. Seems like a complete non-story.

The fact that you can self identify however you want and that upsets some people is absolutely hilarious. They don't have to recognize you or your cultural, racial, or gender identity and yet you still get to cross-dress, dye your skin, or pretend you're irish.

Jenner, Dolezal, and those who have issues with cultural appropriation are silly persons. It's just really no big deal.

There is only 1 race, the Human Race. That can be broken down into cultures and genders within the Human Race.

You're correct. You're either white, black, male, female, etc.. You can color your skin or chop off your penis but you'll always be the genetic race/gender that you were born. No amount of surgery will change that.

It is a non story

Until you start being officially censured for mis-gendering people or whatever

Then it does hurt people

This becomes the part that actually is a serious issue. 89Jr didn't get into the college he had his heart set on (saved me a ton of money), but he absolutely could have put "Hispanic" on his application and he most likely would have gotten in. My wife's GGF was from Spain.

I'm not surprised you don't get it....

Not always. Mrs. CCU was turned down for a Native American scholarship b/c the committee didn't believe she had the heritage. 2 years later (and same committee members), her sister got the scholarship. :dunce:

The difference - my SiL looks straight up like an Indian - round face, olive complexion, dark hair, etc... . Mrs.CCU - like a blond hair/blue eyed German with kinky African hair.
