Shooting at AME church in Charleston, SC

suspect: white male in early 20s.

Police are on the scene of a mass shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

It happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday around the Emanuel AME Church.

Sources told ABC News that at least eight people are dead, and several are injured.

Emanuel AME Church is one of the largest, oldest black congregations in the South.

The pastor of the church is South Carolina State Senator Clementa Pinckney.

At last report, the gunman was still on the loose and a manhunt is underway on the ground and in the air around downtown Charleston.

The suspect is described as a 21-year-old clean-shaven white man, who was wearing a grey sweatshirt and Timberland boots.

The FBI is also responding to the scene.
