The National Park Service announced it is pulling items featuring the Confederate flag from its gift shops, including the one at the Fort Sumter Visitors Center. Director Jonathan Jarvis said books, educational materials and DVDs still could include the flag, but added, “Any stand-alone depictions of Confederate flags have no place in park stores.”

But even the Sons of Confederate Veteran’s shield on Mount Pleasant’s welcome sign near Patriot’s Point has been called into question, and Mayor Linda Page said it’s unclear what action the town ultimately might take.

“Where those conversations go from here is all welcome to me,” she said. “I’m so impressed with my community and am just humbled by the way the families of the victims have moved forward.”

College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell, who once ran a memorabilia store that sold Confederate flags and merchandise, said on Thursday he supports Gov. Nikki Haley’s effort to remove the flag from the Statehouse grounds. But he said he also hoped the fight would not carry over to other physical vestiges of the state’s past.

“In a spirit of good will and mutual respect, let us all agree that the monuments, cemeteries, historic street and building names shall be preserved and protected,” he said. “How sad it would be to end one controversy only to trigger a thousand more.

“The people of South Carolina are entitled to their complete history, the parts that give us pride as well as sadness,” he added.

There is a HUGE difference between depicting history (yes, it happened) and putting a flag in a place of honor (i.e. on the statehouse grounds).

Really disappointed in this.
If private individuals want to display it, go for it. Just lets us know who the racists are.

So even when used in harmless historical context, the flag is offensive and should be purged. The analogy with wargames featuring Nazi symbols is spot on.

This isn't "the starting point". It's a continuation DOWN the PC/appeasement slope started years ago. Like I've said multiple times. It's not about the confederate flag. Sure, it is RIGHT NOW, in this moment, but this is much bigger than the confederate flag and if people don't see that then there's no helping them.

As I also said, I would have loved to be wrong about this. Unfortunately I wasn't. It was pretty **** predictable groupthink for weak Americans.
