The U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether U.S. airlines are working together to keep ticket prices high, spokeswoman Emily Pierce said on Wednesday.
News of the probe knocked down airlines shares in mid-afternoon trade with the Dow Jones U.S. airlines index .DJUSAR down nearly 4 percent. Shares of United Continental (UAL.N), JetBlue (JBLU.O), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), Southwest Airlines (LUV.N), Alaska Air Group (ALK.N), Spirit Airlines (SAVE.O) all fell against the backdrop of a broader market that was up nearly a half percent.
The Associated Press, which broke the story, said that the department was trying to determine whether the airlines were colluding to grow slowly in a bid to keep airfares high.

Well it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that. How much time are they going to fucking waste on this study?

Glad you're entertained. But that doesn't change the fact it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize what they're going to spend hundreds of hours and millions of dollars studying.

There are only about 4 or 5 domestic airlines left. Of course prices will go up.
And if there's "probing" to be done, dback will do it!

I have no doubt there is price fixing
and I have no doubt millions of dollars will be flushed down the "investigation toilet"
and nothing will come of it...
I just like your boner for the Airline industry

you already used that meme
in a thread where you basically said "MEH" as you pointed out that US planes are full to the brim
as some kind of indicator that they dont need to concern themselves with petty considerations like customer service

Of course they do. Complex econ is flawed, but the basic supply/demand relationship we all learned should apply. Gas prices plummet, but prices rise because they're maintaining aircraft and taking seats collisively offline. Meanwhile, they're cramming more seats into an already crowded space, charging for checked bags, and making billions in the process. It's clearly an oligoply, but they have very persuasive lobbyists to screw all of us over.

I want airline ticket prices to skyrocket...
the higher the better
I travel a lot
and would really enjoy it more if less people traveled
Thank you
