VW Busted!

Pretty ingenious until they were found out. Apparently practically every VW/Audi diesel built for the US since 2009 has had software code in its ECU that lets it detect when its emissions are being tested and it then turns on all emissions reduction during the test. When it's not being tested, it allows more emissions to increase efficiency (mpg) and power.

Big fines from the EPA and massive recalls in VW's future:

Holy dogshit! :o
VW may be liable for civil penalties of up to $37,500 per vehicle found to be violating the standard, or potentially more than $18 billion.

GM kills 124 people with its faulty ignitions and just got less than $1B penalty. VW makes a fat kid's asthma flare up in LA and they get $18B. :ohno:

Yeah, GM got off WAY to light. Juctice dept dropped the ball big time on this one. 124 prople died and no one is getting any time behind bars. Heck, even Toyota got a 1.2 billion fine, and their case was far less egregious than GM's...

Are you surprised? Wall Street caused a major recession. Millions of people lost their jobs, homes, families and nobody went to jail.

Too bad they were caught.

I still can't believe a Republican President is largely responsible for the Monster we know as the EPA.

One of those situations where the solution turned out to be worse than the problem.

Well, California drives the entire US car market, so you're paying for all the gadgets that automakers have to install to make CARB happy, regardless of what state you live in, even if it's not a CARB state unfortunately.

For years I have wished that we could give California back to Mexico. Yes it's got a lot of positives. But the country overall would be better off without it. For one thing we wouldn't have a situation where the Democrats can automatically count on all those electoral votes. That alone would make this a better country.

No matter how much $$ GM makes or loses now doesn't matter as far as the bailout/taxpayers are concerned. Govt sold the last of its GM shares end of 2013...So the need for GM to be profitable to pay back TARP no longer applies. The 11.4 billion that was never paid back is gone..

Emissions standards for diesel imports have 100% to do with keeping the Big 3 happy and 0% to do with the environment.

Ironic that big business (in this case domestic auto manufacturers) are perfectly happy with the EPA.

Small diesel engines produced in Europe, Asia and South Africa are much cleaner burning than the diesels Chevy and Ford put in their full size trucks. You cannot get a Ranger or a F-150 with a diesel engine. Why? Because if you take care of it, you can get a million miles out of a diesel, and you won't purchase a new vehicle every 5 years.

They still make old school Toyota Land Cruisers and Range Rover Defenders in South Africa and they are diesel standard (not even an option for a gas engine) and they pollute significantly less than any of Ford's power stroke diesel engines.

This is a prime example (maybe the best example) that Federal rule making over feel-good issues like the environment is fully beholden to the lobby.

GM's truck sales would disappear overnight if you could import a small SUV with a diesel engine in it.

When my wife and I lived in Central Square in Cambridge, one of these was parked in front of the Church of Karmu on Green Street. If you wanted a cheap high, all you had to do was stand beneath an open window of the Church of Karmu and inhale the secondhand smoke of Colombian Gold that wafted through!

You say all this ^ which I totally agree with...
You infer that there is high level collusion - which I agree there is

Without going too expandos on you - we would be 25 years farther along on "Fuel Cell" technology were there not a full court press buyout and subsequent shout down of small fuel cell companies in the mid-1990's

I watched it happen first hand up close and was STUNNED by the brazen nonchalance of the proceedings

And our political system works hand-in-hand to protect them

Its insane :ohno:

Im a big fan of fuel cell technology as well - it is by far the best way to power vehicles (among other things)

but youve got to be able to crack water and that takes a LOT of electricity - using fossil fired electricity defeats the purpose. solar and wind dont produce enough.

until we recognize that nuclear power opens the door to fuel cell tech - its really a moot point

IF we can avoid destroying ourselves for the next 100-200 years

Maybe we will perfect commercial fusion

Which will pave the way to us populating the earth with 50 billion people

And then we will destroy ourselves
