What is religious garb? What is satire?

Should government be deciding what constitutes either?
A so-called “Pastafarian” who claims to worship the “Flying Spaghetti Monster” is fighting Georgia officials for the right to wear a spaghetti colander in his official driver’s license photo.....

“You may find our beliefs to be strange, but as strange as you may feel they are, they are still our beliefs. Some may find it strange that Christians believe that Jonah spent ‘3 days in a whale’s belly’ according to some texts,” he wrote. “Some may find it strange that Muslims believe that Muhammad was carried to the seven heavens on the back of a winged horse. Some may find it strange that Scientologists believe that Xenu, the dictator of the Galactic Confederacy brought billions of people to earth in a DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes, and killed them with hydrogen bombs. Maybe you, the reader of this letter, do not personally believe that Muhammad flew to heaven on a winged horse, but do you question the validity of Islam as a religion?”

I don't know why the State wouldn't let somebody wear a colander on their head for their drivers' license photo if they want to.

I posted a few weeks back about the woman in Massachusetts who fought successfully to be allowed to wear a steel strainer on her head for her driver license photo. I think it's hilarious.

Pastafarianism is strictly satire. No one really believes it. That being said, he is correct. It's no stranger than a Mormon wearing their magic underwear.

You and I can agree it's satire but I'm not sure it's a good thing to allow government to decide that for us.

This is what happens when you make dispensations for silly shit.

Take your fvcking burqa/veil/Odin mask/colander off your head for your DL picture

otherwise dont get a fvcking DL. Im all about getting government out of things, but if we're going to have IDs then you should be able to ID the asshole on the ID

I'm in agreement, but we've already decided as a society that we're caving. So, I say go all in. Make up whatever religion you want and wear your headgear! That may be the way to get it reversed back to the way it should be.

I'm a big fan of outabsurding the absurd, to the point it makes people question the absurd.

They've been doing it in California for at least 100 years... :coffee:

Yes, anyone who makes a point of poking their religious beliefs onto others is a dunce. We agree.

Of course that doesn't apply to people like me who simply defend themselves.

Right. Defending yourself and your freedom to live your life how you see fit, within the law, is good to go.

Defending child molestors simply because they are part of your cult is back in Dunceville though.

I don't see the colander on his head as making it difficult to ID him.

He's D1F. :dunce:

Never once defended child molesters. I have warned against witch hunts, like the one that the Philly DA is on.

If I'm a cop and he hands me that license when I pull over, there's no doubting I'm writing him up for everything I can. No warning for that guy.

Oh. Well that's a big shocker right there, Joe!

But would you defend his 1st amendment rights?

They can have my colander when they pry my cold dead hands off of it.

And if he had priest garb on, I'm sure you'd direct him to the nearest truck stop. :coffee:

We've already discussed what the Supreme Court said about this. The State could appeal any ruling that this is protected First Amendment religious expression, and win.

And it's not even clever satire.

The only time priests speed is when they are racing to a scene to perform last rites. I would give him a police escort and get him there in time.

What if you or he worked at the DMV, you both lose your ability to decide?
