OUR military spending is THEIR military spending.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/02/politics/ ... obamaputin" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm guessing that the same people who like to point to the European social utopia (paid mommy leave for all!) also complain about US military presence all over the world.

You can't do both.

Hey CID, sorry for hijack, but I was asked if I wanted to volunteer for 3-6 months in Nigeria yesterday.

I didn't have to think on that one. In fact, the whole room of analysts all laughed in unison.

You've made this point before and it's valid.

Too bad we can't be fiscally responsible and raise taxes to support European healthcare and schools.

Its easy to declare how those countries don't "waste money" on military spending when they dont need their own military to save their asses.

Fuck if I know. We didn't get past "Nigeria". It'd be wherever the USAID Mission is. Perhaps there's more than one?

Edit: Looked 'em up. It's Abuja.

Yeah I checked it out and it looks it. The bookends looked to be a giant government sector on one end and a sports complex on the other with a giant mosque and church right in the middle. Shrewd.

Yes, yes I have.

I've long complained about the free ride our MIC gives other countries. How we can pour trillions into rebuilding other countries, but won't spend on the U.S.

I have pointed it out many times

Plus, as you know, spending originates in the House - who fund the military far in excess of what Obama has requested.

All I'm saying is if we didn't provide Europe with the means to do so, their pie in the sky social programs that liberals like to point to would not exist. They rely solely on the US to protect against another land war there.

Frankly we should be twisting it to our advantage. I'm thinking free Healthcare and paid vacation for Americans in Europe.

It's not specific on where the money is going... just "central and eastern Europe."

I would assume focused on countries in the Baltics. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania aren't exactly liberal social utopias.

I doubt much, if any, of this money is going to Scandanavia.

Incorrect, and not the point.

All of our support and. Logistics emanate from Western Europe. If we increase capabilities there, it happens in Germany and is the projected to Eastern Europe.

Scandinavian countries are even bigger consumers of the US umbrella than the rest of Europe because they have not been in NATO, but any actions taken to protect mainland Europe protects them by proxy. They have their cake and they eat it too- they not only don't maintain enough of a military to protect their own sovereignty, they also don't pay to play with NATO.

It is no coincidence that they have so much capital to dump into those paid vacations

Can't Americans already study for zero-little tuition in some European countries? (Rumor don't know if it's true).

I do like you're thinking on the vacations. :thumb:

Otherwise, Sweden is the only Scandanavian country not in NATO. :coffee:

Norway also has a sovereign wealth fund of over $7 trillion. If they had to start dumping a little more into defense spending, I think they'd be okay.

Oh, and it's not like any of these countries would need a $600 billion annual budget just to protect their own borders. Not playing world police has its advantages.
