States Rights, Bama Style!

I employ a high percentage of minimum wage earners who are mostly students and still at least partial dependennts including my 15 year old son who (trust me on this) is NOT worth the $9.47 I'm forced to pay him. My business is also not in Chizzy's utopic Redmond where a sammy costs $15, so I'm not for state-wide living wage requirements across the board. But it seems like cities should be able to set their own standards.
While major demonstrations have led to a $15 minimum wage in San Francisco, Seattle, New York Los Angeles, and 10 other cities in the past year, Birmingham’s plans to boost local wages have been thwarted by state legislation.
The city council of Birmingham, Ala., voted 7 to 0 (with one abstention) to become the first city in the deep South to enact a minimum wage above the current federal level of $7.25. The ordinance planned an increase to $8.50 per hour by July 2016, with a second increase to $10.10 set for July 2017.
But the Alabama legislature this past week fired back, passing a bill that prevents cities and counties from mandating their own benefits, including minimum wage, vacation time, or set work schedules. The bill passed easily in both houses and Gov. Robert Bentley signed it into law on Thursday.

That's an interesting question. I would need to hear the argument from the individual cities on that.
While I agree that statewide policies do not always work for all areas of the state, I think something like that should be "approved" by the state though. No different than a city changing the state minimum age to begin working or getting a driver's license. State governments work hard to bring in new business. You create chaos if cities undermine these deals.

Great points.

I believe I have said at least a few times here that one of the biggest problems with minimum wage is the one-size-fits-all approach.
BTW, I might could support a social program to help people without a high level of education and job skills get the eff out of absurdly expensive cities like San Francisco. When businesses can't find dish washers or janitors wages will go up really quickly.

Okay,
I laughed about your son NOT being worth $9.50 an hour...
And regarding Redmond... There are subways and KFC's for people who can't eat real food
But true - everybody else eats real food

don't tell your son I told you this, but you can pay him $8.05
Washington’s minimum wage
will be $9.47 per hour beginning
Jan. 1, 2015. Workers who
are 14 or 15 years old may be
paid 85% of the adult minimum
wage, or $8.05 per hour.

Awesome! I haven't employed a 15 year old before. I won't tell him and see if he notices.

You are now behaving (on a small scale) like Wall Street
"Lets take 10% more of these millions of peoples retirement money and see if they notice"
