Goodbye Shamu

I'm no PETA activist or anything, but I'm so glad to see this. Sea World is ending its breeding of Orca whales and will let its current generation of enclosed animals be the last. As has been much documented, these animals aren't made to be caged.
Unless you're a Sea World shareholder, I can't possibly see how you wouldn't be happy about this news.
One point to Mother Nature.

We're going to SeaWorld in San Diego this summer as part of our vacation - I'm glad my kids will be able to see them before they bow to environmental pressures.
Oh, and I had veal parm last night for dinner & it was delicious.

Killer whales will become forgotten. Much like Indians.

The Indians have never been the same after Thome & Manny left town.

What exactly makes an animal "not made to be caged"? Not trying to be a smart-azz, just trying to understand that. There are probably plenty of fish and stingrays and such in more cramped conditions at Sea World, but nobody cares about them. Is it the awesomeness of the creature that determines whether they need to be set free?
Of course, we're a society that has no problems with eating beef and pork but are just appalled at other cultures that eat dog meat. And we only apply animal cruelty laws to animals that are fluffy and cute. So it's not surprising to see all the angry Free Willy people out there I guess.

I'm gonna say that eating meat is more natural than herding baby orca whales with nets in some cove in Asia and then shipping them across the planet to a pool in Orlando FL to be gawked at by mouthbreathers for the rest of their shortened lives.
Lifespan of orca in the wild: up to 70 years (50 years typical) male and 100/70 female
Average age at death of SeaWorld orca: 13 years

And PETA is against those fish, stingrays, etc...
Why should we remove and breed animals out of their natural habitat? For our amusement?

I should have specified the
amusement of your kids. Take them on a whale watching tour in the San Juan Islands instead.

What would you rather be: a factory farm pig, a lab mouse, or a Sea World Orca? What's natural about labs and factory farms?
You can't criticize PETA for complaining about factory farms and complain about animals that are fully provided for and have plenty of space.
And I'm gonna call BS on the life expectancy thing...
