Another Gun Control Thread

Post by JohnStOnge »

Since the Dallas thing where Police officers were killed has spawned yet another round of "we have to ban 'assault rifles'" stuff I thought about how many Police officers might have been killed if someone who knew how to shoot a long range hunting rifle had used that. My thought was that they actually might have killed more police officers by doing that. No, you wouldn't get the impressive sound of rapid gunfire. But one precise shot at a time.

That made me think of Charles Whitman. You know, the Austin tower sniper shooting thing (see http://www.history.com/this-day-in-hist ... y-of-texas). Here's a pic of the rifle he was using:

Image

A Remington 700. In reading about the incident there was an interesting twist: People didn't realize what was going on.
He first hit Claire Wilson, an 18-year-old anthropology student who was eight-months pregnant. Whitman shot Wilson in the abdomen, killing her unborn child. The shot dropped Wilson to the concrete on the mall as her fiancé, 18-year-old Thomas Eckman, asked her, "What's wrong?"[67] Whitman shot and killed Eckman as he tried to help Wilson.
That's Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman, but you there's a reference link to a newspaper account. That's what happened.

Had a Whitman type who can shoot been using something like a Remington 700 one precise shot at a time instead of blasting out with an "assault" rifle there actually may have been more police killed because there would have been some time to figure out what was going on.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

And imagine how many people a sniper could kill spraying a crowd with something illegal like this.

And sniping isn't generally about indiscriminately shooting a crowd to inflict mass casualties either.

You're perched in a parking lot above a mass of congested people. What weapon would you choose to take out as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time? It ain't gonna be a Remington 700... and, it also ain't going to be something legal and commonly available.

If you're going illegal and want to inflict mass casualties, a MK-19 is the only way to fly.

What made me think about it is that in watching the video of the incident it looked to me like police were exposed for some time. I do NOT know a lot about guns but my thought was that somebody who could shoot could have calmly picked a pretty good number of them off. I was thinking of somebody who is like a deer hunter who is accustomed to hitting targets in fairly precise locations hundreds of yards off. In reading about Whitman I noted that Whitman hit one guy that was 1,500 feet away. I think math tells us that's 500 yards. Hope so anyway.

Well even before that somebody shot 12 of them, they are already going to have been seeking cover & concealment from whichever location the fire is coming from..

Shortest amount of time isn't necessarily a factor. Whitman hit over 40 people. I guess it's fortunate that more didn't die. It apparently took a while for people to realize what was going on.

I expect a lot of gun control over the next several years with the Democrats in control of the Presidency for at least another 4 years. With a liberal supreme court, gun control will have a very good chance of passing thru the courts. Hilary will be able to pick young justices, that will keep the court at a liberal majority for a few decades. Without a change of their social agenda, the Republicans will not win another Presidential election in the near future, unless the Democrats really screw up.

If they do any of that you are going to see us turn into a bigger 3rd world country.

They will get a lot of civil servants and civilians killed if they try that shit because people will not tolerate any more gun control in this country.

Amen brother. If he hadn't had a gun he would have just killed those cops in Dallas with a knife. So we're going to make knives illegal..?

Notice the Phoenix thing going on. 7 dead so far by a guy shooting them one at a time space out over time. Time is not necessarily a factor. Stopping someone from shooting a bunch of people quickly doesn't necessarily stop them for shooting a bunch of people.

The only way you could stop that sort of thing is if you outlaw guns completely thereby having to outlaw all hunting, etc.

Aside from that, I'll write again that the two biggest mass killings in our history were accomplished by guys using box cutters and a guy using diesel oil and fertilizer. If you're focusing on the weapon you're not focusing on the problem.

Guns?

You can believe that more explosives are coming our way. They are much more effective at killing people.

Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Nike have more to do with killing than guns do.

After all the evil murdering bastard needs to be able to drive to where he wants to kill and he sure as hell cant do a good job barefoot.

Anyone for gun control should not be allowed to vote because they are too stupid, clueless and uninformed.
