I've been seriously contemplating buying a gun for personal protection. What do you suggest? Feel free to PM.
Define your purpose and then we can recommend the tool. For personal protection: handgun. For in and around the house protection from thugs: shotgun. For stand off distance and WTSHTF: rifle.

Best to have all three, and several thousands of rounds of ammunition.

BURN DOWN WHITE SUBURBS, SISTER OF MAN KILLED BY MILWAUKEE POLICE URGES RIOTERS
Video footage shows the sister of the man shot dead by police in Milwaukee calling on rioters to burn down white suburbs instead of their own neighborhoods.
“Burning down sh*t ain’t gonna help nothin’,” yells Sherelle Smith.
“You’re burnin’ down sh*t we need in our community.”
“Take that sh*t to the suburbs. Burn that sh*t down!” she demands.
“We need our sh*t! We need our weave! I don’t wear it, but we need it!”

'We need our weave' I don't know whether to  or :ohno:

I would go with 4.

1) 10mm pistol
2) 12ga shotgun
3) Ar-15
4) 30-06 rifle

We can argue which caliber, model, etc is better but with these 4, you have about anything you need.

An AR-10 with suitable optic could be a bridge for your 3 and 4, but there's something about a bolt action for long shooting that feels right.

As far as the 10mm, it's just a little too boutique for my tastes. People can argue about the stopping power of 9mm, but I'm sure as shit not volunteering to be the test subject. Give me a 9 for gobs of capacity and low cost per round (as well as commonality) any day. Just my two cents.

I own a 10mm, 9mm and a .40 pistol :) The only reason I say a 10mm is the one that I have is one that I can pick up and hit exactly what I want anytime. I don't know what it is about the 10mm pistol I have but it just fits me and is comfortable. I can let it set for a year, pick it up at the range and hit 8/8 on a metal tree. I love the way my 10mm flips those things around.

If you're a decent shot, a SW j-frame revolver is a nice pocket gun to run to the corner store with. Five reliable shots at your disposal in a tiny package. If you think you'll need to spray and pray, get something a little bigger that holds more rounds. FNS-9, Springfield XD/M/S series, Glock 17/19, SW M&P, various Sigs, etc

10mm? Well, I've got a 9mm and a .38....gonna have to do.
12-guage? Check
AR-15? Working on it
30-06? Check.

Need to build up my stock of 12-guage and 30-06 ammo, but other than that I'm set.

My 9mm is an XDM. Love it. 19-rounds + 1 in the chamber.

One of the things I love about the 9....especially when TSHTF....9mm ammo will be worth its weight in gold, as will alcohol and tobacco.

GATW,
IF BJUNK had any brains, he'd recognize that stupid line as one I've used for 15 years. It's something he and his crowd were saying around the time of the 1963 SCOTUS decision taking prayer out of public schools.
