Univ. of Chicago: No 'Safe Spaces'

The University of Chicago, one of America’s most prestigious and selective universities, is warning incoming students starting this fall not to expect safe spaces and a trigger-free existence during their four-year journey through academia.

In a letter sent to the class of 2020, Dean of Students John (Jay) Ellison said one of the defining characteristics of the school was its unwavering commitment to freedom of inquiry and expression. Civility and mutual respect are vital to the campus culture, the letter states, but not at the expense of shielding students from unpopular opinions or ideas.

Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called “trigger warnings,” we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual “safe spaces” where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own,” the letter states.

Brown University last year turned a room on campus into a safe space by outfitting it with cookies, coloring books, soft music, pillows and a video of frolicking puppies, along with trauma counselors, after students complained that a speaker invited to campus would be too upsetting.

U of C is an interesting place. The Law and Business Schools along with the Economics Department are extremely conservative while the most of the rest of the university is very liberal.

The Brown U students should be insulted and ashamed that they were given/needed a room with cookies, coloring books, pillows and frolicking puppies to feel safe.

Yay U of Chicago! Trigger warnings and safe spaces basically equate to squelching speech. Don't like what someone's saying? Either ignore them or argue with them. Should be pretty simple.

Brown is an appropriate name for a school full of faggots.

Hey guys I was once held up at gunpoint. So I'm going to need you to avoid using the words gun, point, trigger, guy, man, person, bear spray, bear, spray, Axe Body Spray, house, owie, or anything I decide on.

Also, TW makes me think trigger, so you'll have to come up with a new new warning. Thanks

So, similar but different. Was dropping 89Jr at college and in the main lobby of the student center we come across two bathrooms. Normal set-up, one door on the right, one on the left. First door says "Gender Neutral Restroom" and has a symbol of a toilet bowl, hands washing and a wheelchair. Hmmm, OK. Go to the other door... same thing, only this one has two women walking into it. I pause and go back to the first to make sure I saw the same sign... yup. Now two women walking into THAT one too. I was so perplexed about where to take a leak, I decided I could hold it. I have a gender, I'm not neutral. These bathrooms were obviously not for me.

"Gender neutral restroom" doesn't see like something to lose your shit before.

Seems like just rephrased "unisex" bathrooms - which make sense, imo.

Not for any social justice reason... but, if it's just a single commode... I don't get why it should be segregated. :?

Then just fucking say it. Do we really have to come up with some bullshit name when we had a more simple one in place?

Who keeps coming up with all these identities that further puts people into groups?

You can't be serious...and you must not be in a relationship - at least with a woman (a real one, not a tranny or some invention of your mind).

The reason unisex bathrooms aren't more prevalent is because women do not want to share a bathroom with a guy. Women want the toilet seat left down...and if a man uses the same toilet with the seat down, that usually spells trouble for the chick.

My wife finally came to the logical conclusion that the seat should be left up at all times unless someone needs to sit. If the seat is up, Lil' Cluck can drip on the toilet bowl and forget to clean it up and Mrs. Cluck never has to worry about a wet seat.

But, try to explain that to the hordes of woman out there who don't want to check their toilet privileged status. :tothehand:

But, who fucking cares if it's called "unisex" or " gender neutral"???

They're both fucking awkward names.

But, you're getting bothered by the name attached to bathrooms that either a man or a woman can use.

Who gives a shit?? Do you need a safe space if the names of these bathrooms affend you so much?

You sound like the exact same whiny college millenials you're complaining about.

Those places produce the most minimally exceptional people. Or is it the fewest minimally exceptional people? I'm confused. :?

Seems you and 89 are the ones offended by unisex bathrooms - that have been around since at least the past 20 years.

Also, whatever happened to blueballs?

Anti-PC Conk that claimed he'd never give another penny to Georgia Southern after they had William Ayers speak on campus.

Maybe he is tucked in nice and cozy in his safe space.

Not offended by unisex, just want to know why we had to change a much simpler name.

unisex is a pretty fucking stupid name as well. :twocents:

How about just "Bathroom or "Restroom"?

I don't think I've seen a restroom labeled unisex. We do have "family" restrooms around here which is probably a microagression to the childless.

As far as 89's experience. I would feel awkward following two females into a bathroom. If they were hot, I'd have to fight the urge to look over the wall. Or feel pressure to "push" the pee out to make it sound like I have a giant powerful tool pissing into a bowl. If they were ugly, don't want to be accused of the same actions.

Those are both euphemisms!

When is the last time you've seen a bath in a public shitter? When is the last time you've gone to take a "rest" in a public shitter?
