I'm an asshole...

...let's get that out of the way.
Now, on to the advertisement that most of you saw on ESPN3 this past weekend.
Which way would you run?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5fgJVxbQQE
Now, what kind of person will that ad attract into the Marines?
Anyone have a guess?
Bueller?
"And when the time comes, they are the first to move towards tyranny, injustice, and despair?"
I'm guessing you'll see tons of well educated peeps just running off to get trained to battle goat herders in some barren wasteland in order to prop up some Muslin regime.
Or maybe that ad will attract some folks that would first try to decide exactly whether we need to put our boys into some far off shithole for no reason.
Yeah...let's see. Shall I go into a tech field at the local ITT school, pursue my college degree without the possibility of bullets flying over my head (DSU is out), or should I choose door B, where I can get shot at, and shoot back, in a conflict that will surely be as worthwhile as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Iraq, Afghanistan, and those other places that remind me that I will be fighting, and dying, for the good guys.
Here's an article that sums up some thinking about that ad.
http://thevisionmachine.com/2013/03/whi ... d-you-run/
Of course the punchline to all of this is that our Military is currently NOT helping defeat tyranny at all. It is a ruse...and no one should be falling for that sales pitch.
In fact, we are actively supporting, and dying for, some of the most vile regimes on Earth...all while causing a huge humanitarian disaster. Why isn't that being advertised?

Thankfully very few whiny armchair pussies like you. And those it does attract get weeded out very quickly in basic training and OCS. The Marine Corps is very efficient at identifying turds and getting them back home to their mommies and daddies quickly when they can't hack the training and when they get their wittle feewings hurt. Those are the last people you'd ever want on your side when men are fighting.

I don't know, but I'm sure piss and vinegar is involved.

Its an old commercial. I didn't serve, but I did try to get in to USCG OCS. For whatever that was worth. I foolishly was truthful and admitted to using some illegal substances that several POTUS's have since done so.
That said, I run towards danger to help others. The ad is effective. Just not to yachtsmen, apparently.

So, andy, what you're saying is that you aren't a coward?

I wanted my oldest's middle name to be Danger. That idea was summarily struck down and I quickly retreated from it.

That's an old commercial (which doesn't matter). But whenever I've seen it, my thought was what kind of a man are you really if you aren't willing to run into danger to help others? Not just in a combat situation, but maybe in a natural disaster situation (that man who saved the old woman and her dog in the floods of Louisiana a month or so ago comes to mind) or a terrorist situation. Are you the kind of person who panics and runs away? Or are you the kind of person who steps up to the situation and does what has to be done, even at personal peril?
I think that there are definitely certain people in this world who are made out to do exactly what the commercial says, go into harms way voluntarily, because there are certainly people who are not made out to do that.

In the asshole Cluck's defense...that's not what he's talking about.
He's talking about wars of choice to manipulate geo-politics so the rest of us can enjoy weekend retreats to campy micro-distilleries in the Hudson Valley or Catskills or wherever it is.
This being masked by an appeal to noble courage...

In my defense I didn't read everything he wrote, I think I stopped after his third sentence and then skipped to everyone else's commentary
I didn't read anything you wrote either after your first sentence

You can (and rightfully should) criticize political whim, but why continue to bash people who serve? It's about as low as you can go.
