I think I can see a reason other than economics for people wanting to get out of El Sal. Something like more than 20 times the homicide rate.

It is hardly noticeable, John.

The rate could be the same in New Orleans and you wouldn’t know it. And the murder rate in El Sal is largely the Maras killing each other, with nobody seeing anything.

And for every piece of turf controlled by the Maras, there is another that is not. These “asylees” can flee there. Think of it as fleeing Chicago for Bloomington.
Come on, CID, why would we take your first-person, actually-been-there viewpoint when JSO has stats he's looked up on the internet.

Same court ruled that trans baristas could go topless, so there's that.

With Ross Perot dying there's a lot of talk about the 1992 election. This electoral map is unfathomable today and it's not a one-off. Things sure have changed.

Because first person, actually been there experience is not as reliable as data are when it comes to stuff like that. People are very frequently deceived by their personal experiences.

As for the internet thing: We should all be grateful that we have that tool at our fingertips. El Salvador does have the highest intentional homicide rate in the world. 40 years ago one might have had to go to a library and look things up to verify that. Today that isn't necessary because the internet gives us access to the data.

Here's a story about another person who had first hand experience in El Salvador:

A trans woman is running for a State Senate seat in DE. Same one who addressed the DNC in ‘16. It’s a heavily Donk district, so the outcome isn’t in doubt.

The father is a lawyer that I knew pretty well. He and his wife had 3 biological sons. As it turns out, one is the trans, one is gay, and one is straight.

Here's something you can find on the internet from the US State Department on El Salvador:

https://www.osac.gov/Country/ElSalvador ... f4aec90b02

It's not that it's the absolute worst. You can see from the overall travel advisory page at https://travel.state.gov/content/travel ... ries.html/ that level 3 is the second highest caution level. But, at the same time, it's not Disneyland. It's not a good place to live and economics is not the only issue. Economics is probably related to the other issues. But it's not the only issue. It's not at all unreasonable to think that economics is not the only motivation for wanting to get out.

Reconsider travel to El Salvador due to crime.

Violent crime, such as murder, assault, rape, and armed robbery, is common. Gang activity, such as extortion, violent street crime, and narcotics and arms trafficking, is widespread. Local police may lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents.

Read the Safety and Security section on the country information page.

If you decide to travel to El Salvador:

Be aware of your surroundings.
Avoid walking or driving at night.
Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.
Engage local guides certified by the national or local tourist authority when hiking in back country areas.
Visit our website for Travel to High-Risk Areas.
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.
Review the Crime and Safety Report for El Salvador.
U.S. citizens who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the Traveler’s Checklist.

I don't know how many deserve asylum. My point is that, in relative terms, it is a dangerous country and there are reasons for wanting to get out other than economics. There are 195 countries. The State Department has issued Level 3 or 4 travel advisories for 28 of them. The 4s are places like North Korea.

If you had been born in El Salvador you might very well might be wanting to get into the United States. We who were born here are very fortunate, or blessed, or whatever you want to call it.

He shouldn’t have-

He was doing his job ... being candid for the benefit of the Foreign Office

If it was us, I’d say go after the leakers and land on them with both boots - I think 20 years busting rocks would suffice

But that’s up to the Brits
