Naive me didn't realize that 88 was a numerical code for "Heil Hitler" or that 14 is shorthand for the so-called "14 Words" slogan.UNI88 wrote:What am I doing wrong now?Pwns wrote:

This is how absurd we have all become .....
A US Army public affairs officer is “dumbfounded” that a US Army social media account would post a photo of a Nazi commander at The Bulge during a historical series on the battle:
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ar ... k-n1103041
The guy was a war criminal but he was also a key wartime adversary in that battle. We do not need to be in the business of erasing history.

It’s like being mad at an article about Shiloh because it features a photo of Nathan Bedford Forrest.

India just redefined its citizenship criteria to exclude Muslims...
Which on further review makes perfect sense
the bill is largely an effort to protect persecuted minorities.
It says Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians who come to India won’t be treated as illegal.
They’ll have a clear path to citizenship.
But one major group has been left out: Muslims.
That’s no coincidence.

But right now there is a lot of pressure on countries like Bangladesh and Thailand to take Rohingya refugees. Is it possible that this is directed more narrowly at making sure any Rohingya do not have a legal means of staying permanently?

Re: Miscellaneous news items that don't warrant their own thread
Agreed, don't know enough to really take a stand. The proponents are saying it's to force Muslim countries, especially those closer to the refugees (Bangladesh in the Rohingya case, to do their part with taking in the refugees rather than just passing them on to India. The Ahmadi's are a slightly different case because while India considers them to be Muslim other Muslim nations don't and have discriminated against them for decades. There certainly is some part of this bill that's fueled by anti-Muslim sentiment in India - especially the part that says you need to prove you were in the country prior to 1971 to avoid being at risk of deportation (this bill means only Muslims need to prove that, the other minority groups are protected under this bill). As always, it's hard to take bills like this at face value when there's been ample evidence of religious animosity in the past.CID1990 wrote:I don’t follow India very closely except peripherally as it pertains to Kashmir.Chizzang wrote:India just redefined its citizenship criteria to exclude Muslims...

Of course, with all that said, interesting how no one is asking China, which has a long border with Myanmar where the Rohingya are coming from, to take in refugees. Muslims, for obvious reasons, would probably not want to enter China.

Yep. And heck, the morons at NBC referred to the Bulge as ‘Germany's last major offensive’. Lake Balaton Offensive (Operation Spring Awakening) was Germany’s last major offensive. Now if NBC had said ‘last major offensive in the West’ that would be more correct but argueable. Operation Norwind was Germany’s last offensive in the West. You could argue the ‘major’ part.CID1990 wrote:This is how absurd we have all become .....

Re: Miscellaneous news items that don't warrant their own thread
In this day and age I can see people being triggered over a photo of a Nazi. AND this guy was in fact a war criminal who executed Allied POWs. In fact, I would have to go look at the whole series of tweets from the Army account to see what they had been posting in the entire series to get context.BDKJMU wrote:Yep. I also have heard that the person who colorized and produced the photo (not US military) is a Nazi memorabilia enthusiast (I haven't checked)
If they were posting nothing but photos of Nazis, then that would be an issue. But if it was truly a historical series about the various commanders and notable soldiers involved in the battle, then posting a photo of this guy was completely appropriate. It is probable that a military historian was involved in the project - possibly even someone associated with the War College in Carlisle. If that was the case, those people take a very clinical approach to military history and would not have seen a problem with posting the photo. For example - the tactics of Nathan Bedford Forrest are still taught there because he was a tactical genius who understood and employed tactics that were way ahead of their time, and still hold tactical value in today's mobile warfare environment.
On its face, this reminds me of a colleague who was at my house once who questioned some of the books on my bookshelf, particularly one about Thomas Jackson. She made an offhanded comment on glorifying Confederates. I pointed her to my books on Lincoln, Grant, Patton, and Julius Caesar and asked her if context meant anything to her. I am a military history enthusiast.
At the end of the day, I don't think this portends the New American Reich and people really need to get a damn hobby or something.
