Ironically, proponents of the population control argument like to hold China forth as the model for success.

Ultimately this will likely be just like climate policy... no country is going to intentionally weaken itself in the face of external adversaries. Except maybe the US. We seem to want to self destruct

China is still suffering the consequences of that policy.

Population is already a problem and will continue to get worse. In the US, the groups doing the most "breeding" appear to be evangelicals and immigrants. How will liberals go after breeding without offending immigrants?

Breeding and overpopulation is a much bigger problem in third world countries. How can that problem be solved with humanity and respect for sovereignty?

It can’t.

It will be solved with a healthy lack of both of those things

Who do you think will come out on top in that scenario?

I doubt it will be the “everybody gets a trophy” first world

The next war will be nuclear and will take care of any global warming and over population issues. If that doesn’t do the trick a pandemic equal to or greater than the 1918-19 should do the trick.

It doesn’t make it real, and the author doesn’t suggest that - it suggests that a simulated person plotted along enough data points might “consider” himself to be real. It is both philosophical and scientific in nature.. a play on Descartes’ original “Cogito, ergo sum.”

If a computer can simulate every synapse of the human mind, to include learning - then would that simulation not consider itself “alive”?

There are actual calculations that can go a long way towards proving the hypothesis which places this idea, at least for me, much more in the realm of reality than Biblical creationism.

An unintended loophole in a Colorado gun control bill illustrates what happens when lawmakers legislate technology they don't understand: Firearms owners find a way to work around the law without breaking it.

Dealers throughout the state began selling "parts kits" that contain everything a gun owner needs to assemble their own large-capacity magazine at home. In fact, some gun stores throughout the state now sell magazines only in parts kit form.

This phenomenon became so widespread that a local Colorado news agency, 9NEWS, decided to conduct undercover visits to local gun stores in six counties. 9NEWS reports that in 7 of the 10 stores the outlet visited, "employees at one store after another offered to sell a large-capacity magazine disassembled in parts" to their "9Wants to Know" investigative journalism team.
