I've always believed that school choice (and vouchers) should only be used in emergencies and in areas where there is significant downgrading of public schools (think inner city here). Once you start seeing school choice out in the suburbs where the public schools are not only fine but in may cases pretty good, it's more of a case of wealthy folks (or at least well off folks) trying to get somebody else to pay their kid's private school tuition. I get the case of the poor kid (of any race) being stuck in a terrible situation in a city school where he/she isn't getting an education (and to answer kalmie's question with a question, why should a poor kid have to sacrifice his/her education to try to salvage an underperforming school?), but people expanding vouchers to every instance most of the time have very vested private interests in mind.

It seems vouchers and choice concepts are still simply deferring greater socio-economic problems. It’s tough to fix poor parenting and single parent with multiple jobs homes by shipping the ones with parents who care about their children’s education off to the suburbs.

As for vouchers and school choice, especially for inner-city kids struggling to get out of a system that is dooming their futures, sure, we're not fixing the problem by shipping them out to better schools, but again, why are you satisfied with denying these kids opportunity and the chance to escape their situations, none of which is their fault, while we spend decades (and it's been close to 50 years since LBJ's Great Society and we're no closer to fixing this) talking about it and not fixing the problems. These kids have very immediate needs - 12 years of schooling goes by in the blink of an eye. You're talking about generational issues. Each year that goes by without a solution is another year a whole age group of kids graduate who were sacrificed while we struggle to get answers to things like poor parenting, or single parent households (the horror if we criticize that of course - it's like the debate about being fat - everyone knows that being overweight is unhealthy, but say that out loud or too many times and you're fat-shaming and all fat people are beautiful. Same with single parenting - study after study shows that the single best indicator of educational success and graduating from college in 4 years is to come from a household of two parents - it's true over any and all other categories - but to criticize single parenting is also a third rail - everyone's choices in life are equally awesome).
The Dems are hypocrites for denying school choice to inner city places where public schools have failed and the GOP are hypocrites for advocating school choice but really just meaning that for those private school folks who are looking for another source of income to offset what they have to pay to send their kids to private school.

Carville is strategically right. I just find the “middle” rather meaningless.
On a side note, I just found out “woke corporatism” is a thing now.
