Certainly better than nothing. By a long shot. But it seems there could be a route for a more immediate impact by including older kids.
The area of town they are talking about, those kids for the most part are a lost cause. They're already on the streets slingin dope. CID can back me up on it. The 8-10 yr olds are probably their best shot AND are probably more likely to accompany their parents to the laundromat. :twocents: Sure, outliers exist, but on the whole i'd say the teenagers are lost. The city does things for the younger kids. If you see black kids in Charleston selling you a palmetto rose you should know that, for the most part, those kids have a permit and are part of a program that helps keep kids from turning to crime( I think it's called Rose Kids).
Under city ordinances, sellers of palmetto roses — woven sweetgrass creations that are often sold to couples on downtown sidewalks — must go through a week-long entrepreneurship class and earn a peddler's permit, which they must display at all times while selling roses.

Laundry Matters in Charleston, South Carolina looks like a traditional laundromat with aisles of washers and dryers. But hidden in the back is something surprising: a classroom.
Every Tuesday since March, the backroom of this nondescript laundromat has held free after-school computer science classes for neighborhood kids.
The program, called CodeON -- short for Coding in Our Neighborhoods -- brings basic tech education to kids ages 8 to 10 in one underserved community in Charleston's Eastside.
"Charleston has pockets of neglected neighborhoods where families are seriously struggling," said Carolyn Finch, one of the founders of CodeON.

Transgender robber who wanted back in prison gets 6 years
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A transgender woman who robbed a bank in an attempt to be sent back to prison expressed a change in heart, and a sympathetic judge sentenced her Wednesday to six years in a federal women's prison, far less than the 20 years she could have gotten.

Linda Thompson, 59, told the courtroom that whatever sentence U.S. District Judge Nancy Freudenthal handed down would be fine with her, but she hoped yet to get a commercial driver's license and land a job driving a truck.

"No one really wants you to die in prison," Freudenthal said. "There's more out there than hanging out in custody."

After robbing the bank, Thompson threw some of the cash into the air and tried to give some away. She sat down while waiting for police to arrive.

Thompson was released from prison in Oregon in June after serving time for robbery — a crime also motivated by a desire to return to prison.

Thompson was featured in a 2007 documentary, "Cruel and Unusual," about the problems that incarceration in men's prisons present for inmates who identify as female. In the film, Thompson described castrating herself after Idaho prison officials wouldn't give her hormone treatments.

A successful lawsuit against the Idaho Department of Corrections eventually got her the treatments, according to the film.

She had gone to prison in Idaho for stealing. Her inability to find work because she identified as female and dressed like a woman drove her to steal electrical wire and sell it as scrap, Thompson said in the documentary.

One of the emails leaked by wikileaks... was him giving tips for making risotto creamy.

Yoga pants war! Probably not the kind you want to watch...
It all started when a town resident wrote a letter to the Barrington Times about his dislike of yoga pants on certain women.

“Not since the mini-skirt has there been something worn by so many women who should never have it on in the first place,” wrote Alan Sorrentino. “Yoga pants can be adorable on children and young women who have the benefit of nature's blessing of youth. However, on mature, adult women there is something bizarre and disturbing about the appearance they make in public."

“Yoga pants belong in the yoga studio," he continued. "What's next? Wearing a 'Speedo' to the supermarket? Imagine if men did that. Yuck! To all yoga pant wearers, I struggle with my own physicality as I age. I don't want to struggle with yours.”

The backlash against Sorrentino was immediate.

“What nerve. How dare you,” one woman wrote on the newspaper’s web site. “We will wear whatever we want — as long as we are not violating any laws.”

Wrote another woman, “Live your life and let others live theirs. Your problem with other people's clothing says more about you than it does about them.”
