Exact conversation we just had at the bus stop. If you set yourself on fire, the last thing you want is to be saved.

Also, there are some rumors he may have had some sort of flame retardant suit on. He was certainly walking along calmy while engulfed.

How could you not think to look at something that obvious unless the researchers either didn't think of fairly obvious confounders or that they used their conclusion to draw facts.

This is so succinct and well-put.

I can pretty much promise you the majority of teachers that have experience in small-town southern districts (i.e. one of the few places in the country that are both fairly diverse and don't have largely segregated schools like in the big cities) will tell you that black kids are more likely to misbehave. And black teachers can be the most frank about it ("there too many black kids today that don't get they asses popped at home" one tells me).

And yet largely no one feels safe to object to the data used to justify the Obama school discipline directives because of the political and social climate (you'd think it'd be easier with "Trump's America" and all).

What the hell was a 74 year old doing trying to hike Squaw/Piestwa Peak? I’ve hiked it several times. As I recall, its 1.2 miles/1200 ft elevation gain with rock scrambles at the top. A ball buster if you’re not in very good shape.

Dude. When I lived in Phoenix, there were a brother sister duo that climbed Camelback in black hockey jerseys when it was like 105 out. If I remember right, the boy passed out and was pretty much rescued by a firefighter training in the area.

This news is a couple of days old now, but it bears reminding everyone with small children to watch them like a hawk at pools.

Bad things can happen even when people are around.

Back in summer 2010, when my youngest son was 2 1/2, we were at a hotel pool in NC for my BIL's wedding. My then-wife and I were both in the pool with both of our sons, playing zone defense. Well, my older son distracted me while I was covering the little guy, and the ex didn't switch zones. I turned to older son for several seconds and turned back to see my youngest had walked from chest high water to over his head and he was suspended, leaning forward, and starting to inhale water. He wasn't flailing or anything because he was too young to even know he was in trouble. I yanked him out of the pool and he coughed it out on the concrete. Fucking terrified me. I had some minor PTSD from guilt the rest of that day.

When I was 3, I was almost a victim in my aunt’s neighborhood pool. I wandered off and jumped in. Some Good Samaritan pulled me out. To this day, I think I can remember going under.

They used to play this video in Phoenix during pool season to warn people how quickly shit can happen.

Video was of a grampa, and he was sitting on the edge of the pool (feet in water), with a grand child on each side.

Gramps is talking to child #1, then turns his head to speak to child #2. Sure as shit, Grampa isn't even done fully rotating his head to #2 before child #1 hops off the edge and goes under.

It took so long (4 seconds) for Gramps to notice the kid right next to him had hopped in the water, it made you squirm for the kids safety.

The point? It can happen in a second and right in front of you. That kid couldn't have timed it any more perfect if he wanted to drown.

Not so much news worthy but hilarious.
