Honestly, I don't expect Hillary to make it through the first term. She probably won't die but that job is hell on the body and she's pretty much 70 and not overly healthy despite what a lot of her fangirls say.

If Hillary wins, I doubt her health win improve and her handlers won't be able to hide whatever it is for 4 years. She's the American version of the Soviets Chernenko.

This. If we've learned anything over the past 6 years it's that conks are absolutely clueless about internal organization and planning...and then conveying a consistent plan/message to the public.

The problem for the GOP is they need an outsider like Trump but they need a credible outsider and Trump is/wasn't it. People like Rand Paul and others just get lost in the mix of people from and of Washington DC - basically they look to be products of the system just as badly as the Democratic candidates do. If this primary season showed anything it's that the GOP grassroots just despise GOP Washington as much as the despite Democrats.

For the GOP, they should be able to find someone in the large collection of governorships that they have. Problem is, however, that most of those governors, while great at the state and local level to win those elections, just don't play well nationally. We saw that with Scott Walker and even before him with Rick Perry. Mike Pence, depending on how he walks the tightrope on Trump's ticket, could be the governor who breaks through. He's very orthodox when it comes to GOP ideology and if he can show that he'll hang tough with Trump through this election then he could endear himself to the throng of GOP grassroots who despise the GOP establishment. Other than Pence, the other GOP governors who could be interesting would be Abbott from TX, Sandoval from Nevada, and Martinez from New Mexico.

Fact is the Trump wave doesn't happen if it isn't a known entity like Trump. He brought his own media attention and it go him where he is now. No one else that isn't some big time celebrity can do what he just did. An outsider will never be able to buck the establishment like Trump did.

Trump's problem isn't being an outsider. Trump's problem is Trump. The guy has repeatedly strangled himself on his foot and is still somehow not losing much worse (if any at all) than Romney and McCain.

I think there's a very real possibility for the GOP to become the anti-free trade nativist party while the donks become the multicultural Corporate Wall Street party. Coalitions always break up and reform with new coalitions. The donks used to be the party of economic liberalism and segregation at the same time, in spite of the claims of some that liberals have done everything that is good in history.

I agree, but Romney was going up against an incumbent President. I think Romney was four years too late or four years too early. Granted, I don't think any GOP candidate was going to beat Obama in '08 (Bush years and the novelty of a minority President were just way too significant to overcome), but Romney, if he had waited to run until this election cycle, probably could've made real headway. We haven't had a 4 year incumbent beaten in an election that didn't involve more than two candidates (so throwing out the Perot and the Anderson elections) since Herbert Hoover, so beating Obama in '12 was just a really hard mountain to overcome. If it was Romney versus Clinton right now it could be a decisive Romney win. You have to pick your times to run and Romney picking to do it in '12 versus an incumbent was just bad timing.

What's it say about us that Trump, as bad as he is, is slightly worst than Clinton? I haven't seen any polls today or since Friday, but how far apart are they now? Trump is simply a host unto himself. The Dems are holding their noses and voting for Clinton. The good news is that the GOP has depth in Congress, Governorships and I think State Legislatures. They just can't get a viable, POTUS candidate.


Personally, I fault the RNC to a point for allowing 18 people to run. They should e controlled it and forced Trump to run as an Indy.

I agree about Trump hanging himself, disagree that anyone would have gotten similar traction. Trump got his traction from the uneducated unwashed masses because they knew who he was. Enter any other "outsider" politician who employs that Trump type of rhetoric and vitriol and he gets laughed off the primary stage.

The Iowa Republican Party's Straw Poll would have winnowed the field but the RNC and powers that be knew Jeb would do poorly so they got it cancelled. And that move bit them in the ass.
