Stereotypes vs. Reality

Post by SuperHornet »

After an entire election cycle where what was assumed to be a slam dunk didn't happen, and those favoring the "obvious" were wondering if the other side would act like hoods after they lost, there are indications that SOME of those supporting Hillary are playing the thug even as we speak. CBS-13 in Sac reported last night that there were trash fires in Oakland, something close to a riot in Berkeley, and some sort of protest marching going on at UC Davis and Sac State.

However, I think these are outliers. Oakland probably would have erupted anyway, and universities always have some semblance of a liberal push to them, and they didn't resort to violence, from the reports I saw. The liberals I personally know, which range the entire spectrum from WASPs to minorities, to women, and the LGBTQIA+ community, are understandably and justifiably disappointed. Some are even speculating about moving to Canada. But what they are NOT doing is participating in said riots. They know that a Trump Presidency, however much they dislike the thought, has a perishable shelf-life, eight years tops, perhaps less if Trump is voted out in four years or pulls the "unpardonable sin," so to speak, in the interim and gets impeached. The more intellectual of them also know that Mike Pence will act as a moderating influence on Trump's more reactionary impulses and as President of the Senate will communicate well with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan on compromise solutions to various problems.

So, for the liberal community, the result of THIS election cycle is a disaster, but one that can be managed as the conservatives managed the disaster that was the Obama Presidency. And there's a good chance that liberals will do a much better job of managing that disaster than we conservatives did. Looking at the other levels of government, one could say that they did pretty well, too. They kept the Senate seats being vacated by retiring longtime liberals in Cali (a gimme given that two Democrats won the open primary) and Nevada, and gained seats in other areas. The future holds good things for liberals, if they can just keep their perspective and be patient enough to avoid rash moves. For the vast majority of my liberal friends, this is how it will be. They have always been gracious and respectful of me and my conservative beliefs in times when they were in the ascendancy, and there is no reason for me to believe that this new situation will be any different. I will treat them the same way, and I hope my fellow conservatives will do the same.
