The US economy added 943,000 jobs in July and the unemployment rate fell to 5.4% — a new low of the pandemic era — the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

It was the biggest job gain since August last year, when more than 1 million positions were added back, and more than the 870,000 economists had expected.
The June jobs gains was revised up as well, to 938,000 positions added, showing the recovery's strong pace over the summer.
Since May 2020, America has added back 16.7 million jobs. But it's still 5.7 million short of its pre-pandemic level.

Also from the article:
The hospitality and leisure industries — decimated by lockdown measures last year — were once again the biggest contributors of job gains, accounting for more than a third of the total. Some 253,000 jobs were added in restaurants and bars alone last month.

Hiring also picked up in eduction, according to the seasonally adjusted data. But the labor bureau warned that because hiring and layoffs in education were so distorted by the pandemic, the adjusted data might overstate the hiring in July.
So low paying jobs uptick during tourist season, and teachers going back to work seems to have driven these numbers...which will go back down again when the next lockdown orders go into effect.

It’s already happening and will probably continue until vaccinations reach a level where the healthcare system isn’t threatened.

Question: If 50% of the country is vaccinated (and 70+% of the “at risk” crowd), shouldn’t PEAK hospitalizations reach no more than 50% of what they were before? And if that is the case, then there shouldn’t be a problem, should there?

My sisters hospital is at last years peak, her neighbor lady is in the hospital with covid, but it's probably fake news because it didn't come from Fox news or CNN.

It depends on who’s getting it and mutations. 50% of 330 million is still a big number, big enough to strain resources. There’s also some recent noise regarding even newer variants.

I’m friends with a Nicholls State fan who’s a hard core Trumper but now is posting daily pleading for folks to get vaccinated and questioning why their school district is sending kids back to school.

But perhaps it’s still just the flu?

States like Iowa proved last school year that there was no reason kids couldn't be back in school. Any elected official that prevents schools from opening needs to be thrown out at the ballot box.

So fuck local control?
So it's bad if state governments dictate to local governments and school boards but good if the federal government dictates to state and local government?

Your idea of good government:
Federal government > state governement < local government and school boards

FTR - I agree with you that local governments and school boards should have the ability to make the decisions about what's best for their constituents/students. This should be true in Texas/Florida and in Washington/Oregon. What if the local Cheney school board decided school should be in-person despite what Inslee (or health officials) might say/rule?

None of it is black and white is it? Didn’t we fight a war over this?

I paid attention to both Fiver and Ganny’s comments on schools going back to last year. They both showed examples of where schools were safe. If Inslee is wrong, Inslee is wrong.

Where did I say anything about usurping local control? Read what I wrote. That applies to the President, Governors, legislators, or local school boards. Anybody that does it should be voted out. And they should have their life made miserable by the electorate showing up at meetings, events, etc. until they are voted out.

The Iowa legislature passed several laws this year limiting local control. I am not happy about it. Between being a school board member and a municipal utility guy I'm very much in favor of local control. But the assholes on the school boards in Des Moines and Iowa City decided to play politics with Covid response and fucked the rest of us over.

Democrats use similar logic to justify Biden's command decisions.

I'd prefer they left local matters to local governments/school boards. If local voters don't like it then they can vote them out at the next election.

They won’t without systemic change and that includes our us...our culture changing toward less selfishness and more kindness. Otherwise, current paid actors will be replaced by a new set of paid actors all motivated by wealth and power rather than civic duty.

This transcends ideology.

Everyone has played politics with the COVID response. At this point - it should be up to the town/city/school board. SC has taken away power from the school boards and cities...but in true SC fashion - cities and school boards have rebelled. Columbia - home of the Governor - has a mask-mandate. The school board for my daughters school isn't mandating masks in the class room - but they will be required on the bus (against the law.)

It should be up to the parents and local control - not politicians trying to score points with superficial, mask mandates. There's no need for a state house to determine if a community wants to mandate masks. Zero.
