If Trump does a Carrier-type deal every week for the next 4 years, we could bring back 4% of the manufacturing jobs lost since 2000.

Manufacturing jobs are coming back!!

It's just to say that a President working out deals to slow the loss of manufacturing jobs is only going to amount to a drop in the bucket.

The economy has simply changed. We simply need less people to build shit due to technology and automation.

Actual manufacturing is UP in the United States. And, has been increasing fairly steadily since the recession.

Trump spends Thanksgiving 'working hard' on Carrier plant

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican President-elect Donald Trump said on Thursday he was spending part of his Thanksgiving holiday trying to convince an Indiana air conditioner maker to stay in the United States - reflecting his election campaign pledge to stop the flow of jobs abroad.

Trump, who is also weighing decisions on his Cabinet during a family retreat at his Mar-a-Lago golf resort in Florida, said on Twitter that he was "working hard, even on Thanksgiving, trying to get Carrier A.C. Company to stay in the U.S. (Indiana). MAKING PROGRESS - Will know soon!"

Carrier Corp, a division of United Technologies Corp , responded on Twitter that the company has had "discussions with the incoming administration" but had "nothing to announce at this time." A representative for the company had no additional comment.

Earlier this year, the company said it would move 1,400 jobs to Mexico from Indiana, giving a three-year timetable for the shift.

Fuck Yeah - 'Merica' :thumb:

China tycoon moves jobs to US, citing high taxes at home

Shanghai (AFP) - A Chinese auto glass tycoon has caused a stir by shifting part of his empire to the United States and setting up a factory in Ohio, citing high taxes and soaring labour costs at home.

Cao Dewang's $600-million investment comes after Donald Trump threatened to declare Beijing a currency manipulator and slap 45 percent punitive tariffs on Chinese imports to protect American jobs.

The 70-year-old tycoon's decision to open a glass factory in the eastern American state of Ohio in October -- a rare case of jobs being exported from China to the US -- triggered an outpouring of criticism on social media.

The phrase "Cao Dewang has escaped" became a hot topic, generating nearly 10 million views on the Twitter-like Weibo microblog and many comments urging China to "not let Cao Dewang run away".

Cao's Fuyao Glass Industry Group -- a supplier to big names including Volkswagen and General Motors -- claims to be the biggest exporter of auto glass in the world, reporting 2.6 billion yuan ($370 million) profits last year.

Thanks! I seem to be upsetting you an awful lot lately.

The jobs left due to greedy unions pricing themselves out of the global labor market. Government environmental regulations further pushed manufacturing to more business friendly places. Didn't these things also help Texas take jobs from CA?

True. Not to mention that Chinese manufacturing companies are relocating operations to the US, specifically many places in the American South. :thumb:

I hate to jump in on behalf of 89 ( ), but the article says the guy decided to relocate because of the tax burden in China. Which doesn't really have anything to do with labor costs.

Yeah, I guess a sky-high tax rate kinda offsets those 16 cents/hour wages. :coffee:

:suspicious: Indeed. Our wages aren't going down. China not being able to undermine our wages because theirs are going up is a good thing kalm. I'm no economist, but I am more of a centrist than you, so I'm viewing it with a more open mind.
