What in the hell is "fake news"?
Sounds mostly like a phrase describing anything that doesn't fit one's narrative.

I was sympathetic up until this part...
"Until now, that term had been widely understood to refer to fabricated news accounts that are meant to spread virally online. But conservative cable and radio personalities, top Republicans and even Mr. Trump himself, incredulous about suggestions that fake stories may have helped swing the election, have appropriated the term and turned it against any news they see as hostile to their"
I guess they missed where liberals have been calling for Breitbart to be classified as fake news and to lose their Google ad revenue.
There's a difference between being biased and just completely making s*** up, and Limbauh aren't the only ones doing that. I wouldn't even flag expandspanos' youtube channel as fake news. He at least makes a good faith effort to look at the facts even if the way he draws his conclusions are very amateurish.
It's interesting that liberals and progressives that are so leery of corporate control of government and media are willing to let Google and Facebook be the ministry of truth, but that's none of my business....

It's the new catch phrase being installed. Both sides can use it. No one gives a fuck. By the election results, no one gives a fuck what the media says anymore.

It was when Hillary's campaign implied enough that Obama didn't have a birth certificate or he was Muslim that it got traction and influenced people.
The one I really wanted to be true, was the Hillary campaign floated idea that someone had a tape of Michelle Obama using the term, "whitey" in a speech.

I thought it was "it was because of a video critical of Islam" but I was wrong. That was just political lying to protect a narrative in an election year.
Fake news is "if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor" or "AFFORDABLE Care Act".

I believe that your characterization is correct (I haven't read your link). It seems as if it is an effort by those who control traditional media to stop the erosion of their market share and credibility by casting dispersions on competing outlets in an effort to eventually censor them.

Yes my impression was that during both the primary and the general election Trump was largely successful in insulating himself with the "lying media" approach when the truth is it was a lying Trump. CONSTANTLY lying.
I've written many times that the media are often inaccurate and/or create false impressions. Written that I've been involved in some things that made national news and how being in the middle of them allowed me to see how the media mischaracterized some things. But I've always thought that it's more that media people just don't really understand what's going on or who to believe than intentional misrepresentation. Like quoting a professor at LSU saying floodwaters being pumped out of New Orleans after Katrina was "toxic soup" without knowing there were sampling data contradicting that conclusion.
I think people would've characterized me as being on the "right" during all of my adult life. And I think I'm still on the "right" as such things are characterized. But this thing on the part of "the right" of dismissing reality as "false news" has really gotten bad.

Carrie Fisher and David Bowie did not die because they are the same person.
