PETA Wins: The Greatest Show On Earth Folds Its Tents

A tradition of over 100 years is over.
The show has been nearly synonymous with “the circus” in the United States since the 1800s, when showman Phineas Taylor Barnum partnered with ringmaster James A. Bailey to produce an exhibition of animals and human oddities.
Ringling Bros. had been the target of protests by animal rights groups and was involved in protracted legal battles with many of them. In 2015, Ringling Bros. announced it would stop using elephants in its shows. The lumbering mammals delivered their final performances last May — dancing, spinning and standing on pedestals at the command of the ringmaster — and then were retired to a reserve in central Florida. The move exacerbated the show’s demise; the elephants’ departure ultimately expedited what was a “difficult business decision.”

Not a PETA fan at all but this is probably a good thing. The same with Sea World.

As humans evolve we should become more gentle (by default)
completely conquering every living creature on earth was accomplished years ago
parading them around in slave labor camps is degrading for both humans and animals
We are growing up - it's nice to see

Number of times I attended Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus: 0
Fucks given: 0
I was trying to get a rise out of Alpha and the big game hunters, thank you very much.

I dont get mad at things like this anymore, a few years ago I stopped caring because I will do what I want to do regardless of the law and the people that are trying to enforce that will have a very difficult decision if they ever confront me about it. It is a forgone conclusion that sooner than later you will all hear about it on the news.
People that constantly want to control others cannot in any way control me.

I feel pretty much the same way. It's a little more difficult living in a vaginal blue state (silencers are completely illegal here for instance), but I do the best I can.

Here is the newest thing in Montana, all the out of state fag flyfishers want to stop us from using boats, specifically jet boats on OUR rivers. They want HP limitations on boats and no wake zones everywhere. If this passes I am going to dedicate my life to making the fishing on the Missouri by Craig a living fu*king nightmare for the guides and these fucking out of state douchebags. They have been absolute human garbage for the last 15 years since that fucking River Runs Through It movie came out. They need to visit Oregon and Washington more often and stay the fuck out of Montana.

I
love that movie! I'm thinking about taking up fly fishing and buying property in Montana when I retire in 11 years.

I agree with you HOWEVER it's shutting down isn't a matter of ethics or morality. It was a business decision.

Took my kids to the circus 5 ish years ago, it was really boring and just poorly done. I can see why they are closing down.

Do you not agree that the "business decision" was hastened by concerted actions, over decades by animal rights groups, based on ethics and morality? The lawyers weren't working for free.

We actually saw Ringling Bros. a number of times when the kids were young -- and when I was young. Saw other regional circuses too. Now the only circuses left are Congress and those mental defectives at PETA. They should be lined up, gelded, and shot.

That's not disputed. They aren't making money anymore, it has nothing to do with animal welfare.
That's my point.

I'm ok with it. I think PETA is mostly insane, but you kind of have to feel bad for the animals. When you hear about some guy getting mauled occasionally by some pissed off tiger, I'm quietly pulling for the animal.

Meh. The circus had run its course. Bored to tears taking the girls and it really turned out to be a scam buying stupid flash lights and other junk. And the sphere of death motorcycle thing gets old after the first time.

I could have made that show great again with one hungry tiger.

I'm not confused about the whole - not making money - part...
What confuses me is that it took this long for that to happen
Watching beaten animals work in slave labor camps for marginal entertainment
should be sad for everybody to see
I liken it to hunting Zebra or Lion (and I know several people who have done this)
Driving a Range Rover up to a sleeping lion pride at 50 yards isn't hunting - it's sad
It says a lot about that person

Those animals have better healthcare than 80% of Americans.

Agreed. PETA may have played a part, but the biggest thing that brought down the circus was/is it just not being very entertaining anymore. So many more interesting and entertaining things to do with my money than go to the circus. In the end, it was economics, not PETA, that won.

I don't think the circus was very entertaining to adults since the television was invented. It was mostly for the kids. The toy souvenirs were the prize a kid would take home. Now kids have so many other options, plus 24x7 animal and cartoon networks, the circus just isn't a very high option anymore.
