Seems like an expensive way to increase local real estate prices in the desert. I guess they don't have that pesky mountain to look at anymore. :coffee:

Is it more impressive than the Jericho system? Who built it, Stark or is this one of Justin Hammer's creations?

Dropping this bomb was just a way to grab headlines. The target was apparently a cave and tunnel system. This bomb is not the best way to attack that target type.

MOAB is not guided. You just kick it out of the back of a plane and let it free fall. Not exactly the best way to attack an underground target.

It's GPS guided, but I agree that a bunker buster munition might be a better choice. The MOAB might create some nice over-pressure and have some subterranean effects, but it's not going to be as good as something with a delay on the fuse.

Don't know if it is considered a daisy cutter, but it can't be the same bomb because this was the first time it was used.

It us essentially the same bomb, just newer

The daisy cutter was developed during Vietnam- you dropped it on top of one of those limestone mountains and it would chop the peak off, leaving a flat surface that could then be used as a LZ or a fire base.

You must be thinking of something different. This bomb is used for exactly this purpose and it's guided. The military might know what they are doing here.. The change in air pressure, as a result of the in air explosions, collapses and weakens buildings, caves, tunnels...

It's not built to penetrate. It's built to intimidate...shock and awe!

It's a good thing that bomb was ordered to Afghanistan during Obamas administration...he gets some of the blame....right?

Exactly. This type of bombs is use to soften an area prior to some other type of deployment.

As a person whose job it was to divvy out close air support and who has seen just about every common aircraft and artillery-deployed munition and incendiary used right in front of my own eyes on targets of my selection, I don't think anybody truly comprehends the scale of the MOAB.

Our biggies were Mk84s, which are 2,000 lb conventional air-dropped bombs. All I can say is, they are an effect to behold. The crater they leave is massive and they throw up a mini mushroom cloud.

And the MOAB is ten times as heavy. Ouch.

BTW the impression I'm getting is that this was basically an experiment.

The impression I'm getting is that we just lost a Green Beret to a bunch of camel jockeys hiding in and popping out of a tunnel complex and we just solved that problem. The MOAB has already been tested over a decade ago.

I doubt that we "solved that problem" entirely. Yes I know the weapon has been tested. But this was the first "real world" test. I am basing my opinion somewhat on watching some ex generals on TV talking about it and, unfortunately, I can't name any of them. But that's why I developed the impression that there was an experimental element to this. This was to some extent, I think, trying something out in a real situation.
