Somewhat agree. Over-booking should be a "you" problem for the airlines. The market would then punish those who did it too much.

Although the article also fails to mention the entitlement airlines feel to profit and filling every last seat. Again, this is enabled by government intervention but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the carriers lobbied for this profit protection either.

I'm not defending the airline- they should get their ass kicked (and they are)

Im just pointing out that a government rule, likely intended to protect consumers, was poorly thought out (and remains in place)

If the airlines didn't try to fill every seat they would be forced to raise ticket prices. And then there would be more bitching by the general public about how expensive it is to fly..

They're already charging by the pound in some places in the South Pacific. Pretty soon you and your stuff will step on a scale to determine your ticket price.

As it should be. When flying weight = fuel consumption (fuel 2nd biggest cost for airlines next to labor) = $$.

So? Who said they shouldn't try to fill every seat?

Firstly,
It should be illegal for a licensed business to sell something it doesn't actually have
Then: Run your credit card and take your money in advance (such as airlines do)

This is simply fraud in advance...
If they weren NOT charging your credit card and taking your money - okay - the games on then
But they TAKE YOUR MONEY

And, the United thing wasn't about overbooking.

They needed seats for a flight crew to get to Louisville. So, they were bumping paying customers for their employees.

And, airline companies are allowed to stop customers from boarding if they overbook. But, that's supposed to be handled before boarding. Not pulling people off of planes.
