The risk of McVeighs and McAkbars is far greater.

If NK really wanted to destroy an American city, they could have shipped a nuke to Long Beach harbor and set it off 20 years ago.

I live in the "oh shit" zone of the nuclear plant in Iowa. Nuclear anxiety is just a normal part of every day life.

I live about 40 miles south of this monstrosity. If it melts, I'm hoping the wind is coming out of the south or west and only Flaggyland gets irradiated. Those bastards built this thing about as close to Delaware as they could legally get, without it being in Delaware. Fuck New Jersey.

It would seem it's either a semi-legit concern based on intel suggesting capabilities/Un being seriously fucked in the head, a ramp up to justify increased defense spending, or an exuberant media selling the drama.

They're all super-duper encouraging options...

Regardless...the remedy for me is to go fishing.

Call me a product of the generation too young to remember the Cold War, but I don't spend too much time worrying about nuclear war.

The big danger is nukes getting in the hands of a nihilistic Islamocrazy willing to destroy the world so they can meet Allah and fvck their 70 virgins in paradise, but even that's not that likely. You can't build nuclear weapons in a garage lab and you can't exactly launch them just by lighting a fuse.

Plus if anyone were stupid enough to launch a nuclear strike on major US cities and military bases, the entire global economy is going down with us.

I'm willing to bet that has more to do with really good fried chicken, lack of exercise, and Marlboro than the Hope Creek/Salem nuclear complex. As far as I know, nuclear plants are clean as hell, until they melt of course. The cancer risk is really big at the end! :D

Careful. CitadelGrad has been reading Chinese editorials and sees a head-and-shoulders pattern forming in Chinese troop movements. WWIII is imminent.

Ain't no better fried chicken than in Sussex County, DE. Each little town has one or two great places to buy it -- and I'm not talking about KFC or Popeye's. And the Greenwood fire hall chicken BBQ will be firing up soon.

I live between 2 nuke plants in Minnesota. More concerned about the criminals around here, after my buddy just had $100,000 worth of sports memorabilia ripped off last week.

Yup.

The only time I ever think of the Palo plant melting down is the first Wednesday of every month at 8:52 AM when they test the alarm system for it. I always forget/don't realize what day/time it is so when "out of no where" this sounds

phpBB [video]

There is about a 2 second "Oh shit" moment. Then I remember I'm an idiot and it's just the alarm testing. It only lasts about 2 minutes.

The plumbs of steam from it can be seen for dozens of miles, but at this point I don't even notice them unless they are extra dense/thick. Straight line my house is less than 10 miles from the main reactor in Palo.

I'm more concerned about the number of convicted child molesters/pedophiles in my metro than I am Palo melting down - or anyone actually nuking fucking Iowa.

I'm much less concerned about a nuke attack from a rational state actor (like Russia or China) than I am the Norks giving a weapon to a proxy.

But even that is less concerning to me than a solar flare that puts the lights out for a few months.

We never gird for things until after they have happened (see 911) - but we cannot afford NOT to start spending on hardening our grid infrastructure and transformers against this. The ancillary bonus to this is that it would also protect us against the less likely EMP attack.

The thing I don't get is all the hysteria of WWIII starting over this. Starting? It's been going on for 17 years now in the Middle East.

The NorKs don't scare me at all.

Keaton's in Cool Springs, NC
They serve their BBQ chicken 2 ways --- by the half- or whole-chicken.

I live across from the McGuire Nuke Station and Cowan's Ford Dam on Lake Norman, north of Charlotte. I update my potassium iodine tablets regularly

My favorite Nuke tale is from 30 years ago when they had an 'accidental venting.' Catawba County Emergency Services (northwest side of lake - the Nuke Plant is on the SE side) broadcast over the radio, "Don't be alarmed. The wind is blowing toward Charlotte!"

I'm less worried about the DPRK than Dook Power. They tried MOX fuel (recycled plutonium) about 10 years ago. They cranked McGuire up to 12% power on MOX, realized they had serious heat issues, and shut her down. No word if they stored the MOX on-site after failing.

We'd prefer they do their 'testing' in South Carolina, or, Florida :dunce:

Friday lunch in the summer. :notworthy:

I'm also a huge fan of the two ChickenMan stores in Milford. The Mills Bros just sold the business to Baker Petroleum but they are keeping the ChickenMan brand and recipe.

My parents have a cottage just north of this place.

We call it the Emerald City. If you get on a tube north of it, and fall off south, the water is 15^ warmer. Creepy!
