Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican and chairman of the House's powerful oversight committee, will not seek re-election to Congress, he announced Wednesday.

In a message on his Facebook page, Chaffetz thanked supporters and announced he will "not be a candidate for any office in 2018."
"After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018," Chaffetz wrote.

I guess running oversight when your party rules both branches and the executive isn't as fun.

If Hatch doesn't run in 2018, you'd have to think he'd reconsider and run for Senate.

So, did the FBI find a link to the Russians?

Is he going to jail next?

Maybe run for governor of Utah and win. Then use that as a springboard for becoming the first Mormon Presidential nominee.

Oh, wait...

If they had anything on the guy, he would've resigned immediately.

If he was leaving because of some kind of misconduct I would think he would try to get out in front of it. It isn't like it isn't going to come out anyway. Christ even the CIA can't keep a secret

I like Chaffetz, I wish he would stay. I am betting he is just sick of the BS. I've met him once and talked with him a bit, he is a decent guy. He is a smart individual, I am guessing he has other plans.

Played football for BYU, he was a kicker though so maybe it doesn't count ;)

Lots of rumors swirling on this. Will be interesting to see what comes out. :coffee:
Chaffetz may not finish U.S. House term: media reports

U.S. Representative Jason Chaffetz, the Republican chairman of a House committee with broad investigative powers, said on Thursday that it is possible he could leave office before his term finishes next year, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"My future plans are not yet finalized, but I haven't ruled out the possibility of leaving early," Chaffetz told the Journal a day after the Utah congressman announced he would not run for re-election in 2018.

Chaffetz's staff in Washington, D.C., and in Utah did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In Utah, officials have begun running informal scenarios on how and when to hold a special election should Chaffetz resign, but have not been formally notified of the congressman's intentions, Mark Thomas, the state's director of elections, told Reuters.

Thomas said his department in the office of Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox was basing the informal information-gathering on Chaffetz's statements to local media that he might leave office early.

"We don't know what he's planning," Thomas said. "This is more informal, just wanting to know ourselves and be prepared."

Chaffetz, a conservative Republican who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2008, gained prominence as head of the committee that investigated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was U.S. secretary of state.

Chaffetz's remarks on a possible early departure from office were first reported by KSL Radio in Salt Lake City.

Chaffetz, 50, in the past had considered running for a U.S. Senate seat. A former Chaffetz aide on Wednesday told Reuters the congressman may run for Utah governor in 2020, though no firm decision had been made yet.

He lives in his office in the rayburn building. His fam is in Utah. He has kids that will be leaving the nest over the next few years. I think the guy has decided to spend time with the family (with some persuasive help from his wife)

You could be right but the "spend more time with my family" reason for politicians is like a vote of confidence for a coach on the hot seat.

If Chaffetz had one iota of scandal around him ... like a recording of him saying the word "tranny" or a video of him raising an eyebrow at a woman...

It would be leading on MSNBC and skelly would have posted all the info by now

It has to be tough to be a thinking Republican right now. You have to sacrifice your integrity in order to support Trump. I'm proud of my wife for not doing that. I'm proud of her for both resigning as a State Republican Central Committee member and changing her voter registration from Republican to Independent as a result of the Republican Party nominating Trump then falling in line behind him.

Wait

It took a Trump to get you and your wife to realize the GOP (like the Dems) have no principles?

False equivalency.
Though, I will agree that 'special interests' (nod-nod, wink-wink) generally purchase Pols on both sides of the aisle.

Doesn't feel right unless he has just decided to lay low and see if he can let time repair his credibility. These true believer types don't walk away from saving the nation from gays just because his wife told him to.
