Supreme Court will not revive North Carolina voter ID law

Supreme Court will not consider reviving controversial North Carolina voter ID law
... The outcome was a major victory for the Obama administration, the Justice Department and a wide group of civil rights organizations that challenged North Carolina’s law, which was one of the country’s most far-reaching.

“This law, enacted with what the appeals court called discriminatory intent and ‘almost surgical precision’ targeting African-American voters, is meeting its much-deserved demise,” said Dale Ho, director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project. “An ugly chapter in voter suppression is finally closing.”
The Goobs in the NC Generous Assembly will try, try again ... count on it.

I take it you're against verifying the identities of voters, then?

I haven't read the NC law. Maybe it has Easter eggs in it that make it objectionable. But the idea that we should be able to have only eligible voters (I.e.: LIVE US citizens) voting shouldn't be controversial.

I've done thousands of immigrant visa interviews- where the applicants have already spent time in the US on non-immigrant visas or illegally. If I had nickel for every time one of them brought me a voter registration card as some kind of proof of their time in the US I'd be retired already. I don't know what the overall number would be, but my anecdotal experience tells me that at least among Vietnamese and Salvadorans, it is a thing.

There are lots and lots of very progressive countries that require ID for voting. The US is an outlier in that we don't.

Maybe this is one of those issues where people are going to have to go against their libertarian tendencies and advocate for a national ID? Then the argument that some states can conspire to keep those blacks out of the polls should be invalidated?

This is a tricky one...
I think a State should be allowed to "manage" it's own internal concerns whatever they might be
as long as it's not an infringement on CITIZENS rights, I don't care about aliens rights

That said:
How do you prove you're 21 in order to purchase alcohol..?
if a State issued identification card is somehow an infringement of your freedoms

:geek: I can only assume there's something I don't understand here

They are STUPID for not doing their own research and discovering the truth on their own

It's like Religious folks
They've been fed bad information for a long time and it becomes a "Truth" for them

I completely support requiring a picture ID to vote. It's required in Louisiana and I have never heard about anybody objecting to it. It was required before it became a big issue. You show up at the polling place, show your ID to the people, they look at it and locate your name for you to sign to show you voted.

However, something like that video doesn't really infer anything. If the person making it wants to they can very easily just not show anybody that says something that's contrary to the point they're trying to make. And even if that didn't happen that certainly wasn't a "scientific" sample of anything.

If you really want to answer the question of whether or not Blacks really are less likely than whites to miss voting due to voter ID laws you'd have to design some kind of "scientific" survey to look at it. A video like that might be fun but it doesn't really provide any useful information with respect to the question at hand.

Jesus, man. Nobody is claiming or even inferring that the video is "scientific". But if you don't think it's representative of the way libs feel about the po' lil' ol' black people who can't afford nuttin', then you're living in la la land.

Here's the kicker:

showing ID in no way verifies your eligibility to vote

proof of US citizenship is not required to get a state ID

I think it's clear that liberals believe that voter ID laws disproportionately affect Black voters as well as other constituencies, such as college students, that tend to favor Democrats. But that video does not in any way debunk that belief. That's what I'm getting at.

Like for instance the proposition that Blacks are less likely to have a suitable ID. The guy interviewed some Blacks that had suitable IDs. Do you think, if he had encountered a Black that didn't have a suitable ID, that he'd have included that interview in the video?

My bet is that he would not because it wouldn't contribute to the point he was trying to make. And that's one of the many problems with trying to make a case with that kind of video. Videos like that are cute, but they don't really provide support for whatever the proposition is.

True. I guess the only benefit of having an ID is potentially reducing the chance that the person who is voting is not the person registered and indicated on the log.

If anybody's arguing that we need to do a lot more to reduce the risk of people who are not eligible to vote voting I am part of the choir you're preaching to. In today's world it should be possible to reasonably ensure that someone is eligible to vote before you confirm their registration should be possible. And I would be in favor of using biometrics such as fingerprint scanners at voting sites. You could always have a system to kind of "hold" votes to give people a chance to correct things if for some reason the equipment malfunctions.

I believe that the number of noncitizens voting is greater than the number of dead citizens voting- by a long shot.

I do know that there is a misconception among LPRs (and it is widespread) that they can vote. And there is nothing to stop them. Hell, many states sign them up with the check of a box when they get a drivers license.

Given that we are a country with a significant non-citizen population, we really should be considering a way to verify status when registering people to vote.

Do you think the number of noncitizens or dead people voting in 2016 was greater than the number of people allowed to vote who didn't vote because of shorter early voting, no same day registration, or because they didn't have proper ID?

And, why limit the valid IDs to ones that whites disproportionately have and disallow state issued IDs that blacks disproportionately have (like government employee IDs)?

Government issued IDs are only required for in-person voting. Whites overwhelmingly vote absentee more often than others. Absentee voting is exempt from ID requirement. Absentee voting is one of the most common ways of fraudulent voting (people registered in two states). Why not address absentee voting at all?

How many Floridiots with mountain homes in NC voted in person in Florida and voted in North Carolina absentee? Greater or less than the number of dead people or noncitizens voting in NC in 2016? :coffee:

All good point and all reasons why reasonable adults, without partisan bitterness, should be able to sit down and hash this out and come up with a system that allows everyone who should be eligible to vote the chance to vote and should be able to verify that only those people are voting. We don't have that today - both parties are at such loggerheads against each other and both parties are noticeably lacking in reasonable adults that we end up with the system we have - a broken one where we really don't have a clue who is and who isn't voting and even in many states a way to verify that votes casted were even counted correctly. Neither side seems interested in fixing it so we have what we have. :coffee:

All of these things you mentioned are horse after that cart. Citizenship should be verified at the point of registration. Identity should be verified at the polls. You send out one ballot per registration. You tie registration to one identity and then just as states do with license plates, drivers licenses, and five thousand other things, have them interface to ensure there aren't double registrations. (Take a guess which side would oppose this)

The part about blacks and whites disproportionately having one ID or another is immaterial - we address THAT problem instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water. That argument is tantamount to saying we'd rather allow anyone who wants to to vote rather than inconvenience someone into going to get a drivers license (which everyone knows those simple blacks don't know how to do, apparently)

As an aside, in nearly 17 years of checking IDs I never ran across a black person who actually didn't own a state ID. And that was in the regressive third world country known as South Carolina.

Exactly. You try buying King Cobra and Newports without ID. Or cashing a check without ID. Or getting a job without ID.

Btw, you also forgot to mention that you were in the liberal bastion of Charleston and not the conservative sanctuary of Rock Hill or Columbia.
