So my wife and son went to Virginia Tech freshman orientation the last couple of days. Wife said there was some sort of introduction thing where they had to either write or state their name and which gender pronouns they identify themselves as.Ibanez wrote:

Hi5.1 had to fill out a form for Iowa to answer the same thing and it was on her name tag for orientation. When we were at orientation last month many of the speakers started out by saying things like, "I'm Robert, I use the pronouns he/him/his". Fortunately they didn't ask parents to do that. I'm guessing it wouldn't have gone well.CAA Flagship wrote:So my wife and son went to Virginia Tech freshman orientation the last couple of days. They got home last night and, yes, it was for a nametag.HI54UNI wrote:Hi5.1 had to fill out a form for Iowa to answer the same thing and it was on her name tag for orientation. At first I was thinking that they introduced themselves to a group and everyone had to remember this for each person. But it's on the nametag.
So it has my son's name, and underneath it says:
He, Him, His, Himself
So if I'm talking to THAT person, and I read his nametag, what the fuck am I supposed to do with that information? I wouldn't use any of those words when talking to him. I would say "you". Now, if I was talking to someone else about that person, I would use those words but he isn't there so WTF does it matter?
I get that certain people are hypersensitive to identity and want people to address them the way they want, but that's a challenge. "He" or "she" can be determined by sight easily for 99.693% of the population (I once called a lady "sir" because she had a mustache. ), but there is almost no way to tell for many of the people that want something different. I would think it would be easier to just suck it up and deal with whatever people happen to use rather than "correcting" them all the time.

When someone isn't part of the conversation I try to use they, them, etc. just to be safe. I had it happen at a restaurant on Sunday. I didn't know the gender preference of the waitperson but called them she because I felt that was the most likely choice but I should have used they.

I posted this when it happened a couple years ago but 89Jr in his freshman honors class at Maryland was asked to do the same and he immediately got up, left, and dropped the class.CAA Flagship wrote:So my wife and son went to Virginia Tech freshman orientation the last couple of days. The outrage that followed Hubbard's gold medal wins in Apia prompted the Games Council to commit to a thorough review of its policies, and groups in New Zealand and the United Kingdom have since called for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend its rules that allow male-to-female transgender athletes to take part in women's competitions.

I'm sympathetic to people's feelings. I really am. If I know someone wanted to be called something other than he/she, then I would do it. But if I don't know, and I call a person he/she, that person better not get pissed off at me while correcting me. Fuck that person for not understanding that the neon fucking sign on the top of its head is not lit.UNI88 wrote:When someone isn't part of the conversation I try to use they, them, etc. just to be safe. So I asked my wife and son how many nametags did they notice that read something other than he/she. They didn't notice any. Probably only saw 50 of the 500 or so.

Um... the Globe is indeed "warming"
That isn't even in dispute its simply a documented fact that nobody is even bothering to argue
except our completely uninformed President...
What's in dispute is if the warming trend is indeed a cycle or a problem
That is the debate
Nobody is debating "if the globe is warming"
because we have these things called thermometers since about 1700
What is also fascinating is that "pockets" of land mass are getting colder in winter and hotter in summer
and being effected by new wind patterns (see: Iowa and Central Europe)
but overall the earth temperatures are rising

What? The debate is whether man can do anything about it. It doesn't take much to determine if sea level rise will be a problem.Chizzang wrote: What's in dispute is if the warming trend is indeed a cycle or a problem
