The savings: $90 million a year, or two thousandths of a percent of the $4.4-trillion federal budget.
The collateral damage: about half a million children who would no longer be eligible for free school meals. They’re a subset of about 1 million children living in households that would lose their eligibility for food stamps.

While I agree this is not the hill to die on when we are spending money as as foolishly as we are it's a little more complicated than what is being portrayed. People may still be eligible but they will have to apply separately for the hot lunch program instead of automatically qualifying based on other benefits they receive. A perfect example of govt bureaucracy at its finest.
What's really dumb is that they are doing things like this while giving schools money to run free hot lunch programs all summer for kids with no income restrictions. My kids can go eat for free and if I want I or any other adult can go eat for $3.00.
