Ever vigilant for ways to save money for the overburdened federal taxpayer, the Trump administration last week delivered its analysis of a change in eligibility for free or reduced-price school breakfasts and lunches.

The savings: $90 million a year, or two thousandths of a percent of the $4.4-trillion federal budget.

The collateral damage: about half a million children who would no longer be eligible for free school meals. They’re a subset of about 1 million children living in households that would lose their eligibility for food stamps.
Hey Joe Biden, shouldn't you cite your work when you plagiarize it? And last week was October?

https://www.latimes.com/business/story/ ... ool-lunchl

While I agree this is not the hill to die on when we are spending money as as foolishly as we are it's a little more complicated than what is being portrayed. People may still be eligible but they will have to apply separately for the hot lunch program instead of automatically qualifying based on other benefits they receive. A perfect example of govt bureaucracy at its finest.

What's really dumb is that they are doing things like this while giving schools money to run free hot lunch programs all summer for kids with no income restrictions. My kids can go eat for free and if I want I or any other adult can go eat for $3.00. :dunce:

I’m a complete pinko Commie on school lunches

School is compulsory therefore if the kids have to be there they shouldn’t be on the hook for lunch costs

Now whether or not school should be compulsory is another topic

You sure we want our government feeding children? Have you seen what they serve?

Agreed -

And it seems to me an easy fix...

Instead of Byzantine farm subsidies ... pay small farmers for allotments and then use that food for school lunches

... that is, if we really must have the Federal government involved in this

Problem is there isn't one fed food assistance program. There's more than 1 doz. Or maybe its 2 doz. Government efficiency at its best.

I'm torn between government bloat of this kind - it maintains a certain level of waste and incompetence which is actually healthy for reminding certain statists that the government really should be the last option when looking for solutions to things like this

But... we already have farm subsidies which encourage mega farms and kill small farmers. It seems to me that state run programs to subsidize these small farmers, using at least a portion of the large farm subsidies (without completely taking them away) ... and a requirement that those farm subsidies feed directly into free school lunches for all students... that seems like the kind of thing everyone could get behind

But the bureaucrats at Dept of Agriculture and Dept of Education and probably a few other agencies would head up the Hill to tell congresscritters why all of this is a bad idea

Lol at congresscritters listening to bureaucrats.

it would be the mega farm lobby that would head to the Hill to fill their campaign warchests and tell them to get in line.

and as far a Iran being "terrorists"
I'm not entirely sure they are any more of a terrorist nation than we are...

I didn’t say anything about 150 billion. Gee, that pile of cash in that meme looks closer to a billion or 2.

FACT:
The US paid Iran 1.7 billion in CASH..

That’s part of the equation too

But you have an incomplete and uninformed view of things (surprise) if you think Federal agencies don’t act with agendas (kinda their jobs in a way)

Every single one of them have bureaus dedicated solely to cajoling Congress - DoD and State have the biggest ones

My FiL has tried to do that in SC. He’s been working with the state govt to get local grown food to the schools. He even has the backing of Boeing and their checkbook. The big distributors have such a hold that it’s been impossible to get any movement. They give out money and perks at all levels that nobody is going to turn them away.

It’s a shame....it all comes down to money and power and NOT what’s best for the kids.

Not a talking point, but that seized money was already gone before Obama gave it away again. SCOUTS upheld a 2014 lower court decision that the families of victims of Iranian backed terror be paid that almost $2 Billion. Call it what you want, but the cash they received was no longer theirs.
