Yes and no. Yes in that she's been a consistent critic of the situation and I agree that it hasn't improved under Biden. No, in that I don't think we should have open borders (no very libertarian of me I know but the world has bad people who bear ill will towards America and we should protect our borders just like people lock the doors to their house or car - does AOChe leave her house unlocked and just let random people come in?). We should send immigrants back across the border and give them a date and time to return for a hearing on their case rather than holding or releasing them.

Totally agree. I never had a real problem with severely limiting immigration. If we needed doctors and engineers from other countries that’s a symptom that could have been simultaneously addressed. The wall was a clumsy concept but at least would help and employ people.

Not very liberal of me either.

For the most part, doctors and engineers aren't coming across the Mexican border. They're flying in with H1B or similar visas. The US used to be a net importer of talent and that was a positive and should be encouraged.

Would you rather our best & brightest left for other countries or that other countries' best & brightest came here?

Importing talent helps drive innovation and improves quality of life. Companies founded by first-generation immigrants: Google, Tesla, eBay & Yahoo. Apple and Amazon were founded by 2nd generation immigrants.

I don't know - I'd guess it is a mix.

The bottom line is that I'm not against immigration, I'm very much for it. Immigrants built this country and are a part of our culture. AOChe's positions on immigration are based on passion, not reason. A rational immigration policy would factor in bringing in doctoral students from India, coders from Ukraine, and other people of talent. The poor and destitute from Mexico and Central America would have an opportunity but ICE would not be abolished and the border would not be open. A reasonable government would try and understand how many low and unskilled people we can realistically absorb without negatively impacting our quality of life. It would also work on helping the countries these people are coming from improve their quality of life so that people wouldn't need to leave their homeland (I think AOChe and I are probably in agreement on this last point).

OK, if we can all agree to this, what’s stopping us from getting it done???

I used to work at a resort in Phoenix and one of the guys I worked with was Mexican. He worked in the men's locker room at the Spa and his son cleaned pools all day. When they were done working at the resort, they would then go and clean a local junior high. Essentially worked 16 hour days.

If Mexicans want to come to America and work, I have no problem with that, especially after meeting those guys.

I completely agree with you, the key is coming here to work and make a better life for themselves. There is also a limit to the number of those kinds of jobs. I'm less inclined to let in people who are coming for healthcare and other benefits. Should we abolish ICE and essentially open the borders to an unknown number of immigrants? How will we accommodate them in the short term and the long term?

Let’s fix our own people first. Limit immigration and for the thousandth time jail the fuck out of illegal employers.
