New law imposes $100 fine for slow drivers

A new law is imposing a fine for lingering in the left lane on highways and interstates.

Starting July 1, drivers who break the new law can be fined $100 if they linger in the left lane at a slow pace, instead of treating it as a passing lane, according to House Bill 2201.

The law requires motorists driving at “less than normal speeds” to travel in the right lanes of the highway.

Under an earlier bill, drivers could have been charged up to $250 for the infraction. Donk Gov. Terry McAuliffe recommended the fine be lowered before the General Assembly passed the measure in April.

This is brilliant lawmaking.

That's what you call feel-good legislation. I'm all for it, but that charge wouldn't stand up in court, at least in many cases; and I'm sure it will be challenged frequently. Common courtesy is being violated, but no real law. That is a state that puts people in jail for driving 75 mph. Now they want to give you another ticket for doing the speed limit?

Remember when VA used to be conservative and didn't try to generate revenue everywhere? Seems like a lifetime ago.

Hell's yeah! Youse can hypermile all you want to in the People's Republic, but over here in the Commonwealth that shit's only good in the right lane.

There's a law like that in Louisiana. I don't think it's had much effect.

But, to me, the main problem isn't people who drive slow in the left lane. It's people who want to speed.

Like, I pretty frequently drive between Baton Rouge and New Orleans at around 5 am. I want to drive at the speed limit of 70. Almost all of the people who want to drive below 70 drive in the right lane as they're supposed to. The problem is people who think it's SO important that they go OVER the speed limit.

THEY are the ones that make it impossible to drive AT or even close to the speed limit. If you want to drive 70 and you change to the left lane in order to pass people who ARE DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO if they want to drive LESS than 70 you immediately have people who want ot drive 10 or 20 mph ABOVE the speed limit crawling up your ass.

70 speed limits on interstates are silly. A lot of the states out west have 75-80..

There are some stretches of Interstate in Louisiana that have a 75 mph speed limit. This stretch, between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, has a 70 mph speed limit.

And if you just want to drive the speed limit the slow drivers aren't the problem. It's the people who think it's just CRITICAL that they drive well above the speed limit that are the problem.

Being the way I am I've actually done calculations on how much time they're saving. Most of them exit no farther towards New Orleans than the Highway 22 exit. That means a distance of about 20 miles of 70 mph interstate. If they drive 80 vs. 70 over that distance they save a whopping 2 minutes and 8 seconds. And of course they can't really do that because what they end up doing is having to go a little slower than 80 while tailgating drivers in front of them. Meanwhile they render the driving conditions way more dangerous than they need to be.

What gets me is that a lot of people who want to completely ruin the life of someone who drives at 30 mph with a 0.08 BAC think it's perfectly fine to drive like that. Never mind that they're creating more risk than the person who drives at 30 with a 0.08 BAC is.

Yes. I have. And the results indicate that speeding like that is totally irrational behavior.

Of course I'm not the only one that's done it.

70 mph speed limit would be awesome.
