Good think piece here. Which generation do you most identify with?
I've always hated my generation but I'm beginning to warm to it. You're welcome, boomers and millenials...
Why Generation X Might Be Our Last, Best Hope
Caught between vast, self-regarding waves of boomers and millennials, Generation X is steeped in irony, detachment, and a sense of dread. One of their rank argues that this attitude makes it the best suited to preserve American tradition in these dark new days.
................Irony and a keen sense of dread are what make Generation X the last great hope, with its belief that, even if you could tell other people what to say and what not to say, even if you could tell them how to live, even if you could enforce those rules through social pressure and public shaming, why would you want to? I mean, it’s just so uncool.
I never really believed the notion of a generation. If four people are born every second of every day, how can you have a generation? But I get it now. A generation is the creation of shared experiences, the things that happened, the things you all did and listened to and read and went through and, as important, the things that did not happen. We are the last generation to grow up with crappy video games, with actual arcades instead of quality home consoles. If you wanted to play, you had to leave the house and mix it up with the ruffians. That is, we are the last Americans to have the old-time childhood, wherein you were assigned a bully along with a homeroom teacher. Our childhood was closer to those of the 1950s than to whatever they’re doing today. It was coherent, hands-on, dirty, and fun......

I think certainly from a pop culture and music scene the late Boomers and Gen X'ers get the win. A lot of friends with kids in their 20's seem to know all the lines to the movies and songs I grew up with in the 80's.

I've always thought it quite asinine that someone might think a person born in 1981 ("Gen X") more readily identifies with a person born in 1961 (also considered a "Gen X") than a person born in 1982 ("Millennial").
That's assuming Gen X is 1961-1981, then Millennials are considered 1982 to 2002. A quick look at the googles shows me that there are many differing year ranges. Doesn't matter what the year range is though.

Sometimes I'm a Leo and other times I'm a Cancer. And I don't GAF.

1961 isn't Gen-X. It's late boomer.....

I've never really paid attention to the generation labeling (quite honestly it seems stupid) but doesn't Boomers go through something like 1965 or 66? Mrs89 is a Boomer, I am not (64 vs 67). I thought Gen X was only like 65-75.

What part of this was difficult for you to understand?

I'm 1962, a late boomer, and I have nothing in common with someone born in 1981. Hell, I'd already graduated HS by that point. I get your point. But 1961 ain't Gen-X. Just correcting your obvious mistake before somebody flamesprays you for it.

I googled "Gen X" and this is the first thing that pops us
https://www.google.com/search?q=gen+x+y ... e&ie=UTF-8
Generation X
Generation X, or Gen X, is the demographic cohort following the baby boomers and preceding the Millennials. Wikipedia
Period: 1961 – 1981
That's what I went with. But like I said, the year range doesn't matter. Thinking that a person usually identifies more with someone born 20 years prior to them versus someone born the year after them is just stupid to the 6.93rd degree.

That would be stupid, but since Gen X only covers 10 years, your point is moot.

Gen X is just trying to take credit for Obama. Changing the rules after the fact again.

I've Asked Jeeves and found 10 year, 15 year and 20 year ranges. Starting in 1960, 1961, 1965, etc.
Honestly, what is the real definition that supercedes all others?

So what you are saying is that a 20 year period is too long. I get that argument. It should be more like 15 years. But the question is where the cutoff lies. Nobody gives a shit in their first 10 years of life. The cultural influences occur after that. But should the cutoff be when a person is 10, 15 or 20 years old? As a person born in 61, I was probably more influenced by the 80's more than any time period since I was in my 20's then. But a person born in 75 is not as influenced by the 80's.

My real argument is not a persons age per se, but more with the provided year ranges for any generation. I've just never prescribed to the 'generation' definition, whatever the year range might be.
