Alabama Senate Special Election

Post by Skjellyfetti »

Roy Moore vs. Luther Strange in R runoff tomorrow. General election in December, but hard to see Doug Jones making much of a dent.

But, what an entertaining shitshow the R runoff has been.

Palin, Bannon, and Nigel Farage making appearances for Roy Moore.
Trump and Pence for Luther Strange.

Roy Moore dressed up like a cowboy and showed off his little snubnose to demonstrate his 2nd amendment bona fides..
2016 is going to end up looking like a normal in this country. :ohno:

Guess the endorsement of Trump and Mitch McConnell wasn't enough.

Right? Especially since he gave such an enthusiatic speech last week. With lines such as
"I have a lot of friends. And some of them say, 'Do you mind if I go to the other candidate?' Really, you can."
This begins a looooong story Trump tells about Strange and his loyalty. But the President begins the story by noting that lots of his friend are for Roy Moore -- and he's totally fine with that!
"I don't know him. I met him once."
Trump's lack of a relationship with Strange is an odd thing to highlight given that Trump is in Alabama telling people to vote for the incumbent senator
"The last thing I want to do is be involved in a primary, OK? I could be sitting home right now getting to watch some of the games tomorrow."
Kind of a weird thing to say, no?
"And I might have made a mistake. And I'll be honest, I might have made a mistake."
This is totally incredible. While at a last-minute campaign rally for Strange, Trump admits he might have made a mistake in endorsing Strange. Yes, really.

"And I told Luther, I have to say this, if his opponent wins, I'm going to be here campaigning like hell for him."
See, so I probably shouldn't have made this Strange endorsement because if he loses, people will say it's bad for me. But, I don't really care because I'll campaign for Roy Moore too. Same difference!
"I'm taking a big risk because if Luther does not make it, they are going to go after me."

The electoral disgust with anything considered business as usual in Washington continues. This guy's going to be a Senator - think on that. Trump didn't win entirely because of his Trump brand - he won because of people's intolerance to regular Washington politics. I don't see that abating anytime soon.

Ain't gonna happen. People like crazy, and crazier the better, and this guy fits that bill very well. Trump is just the tip of the iceberg as a good chunk of America continues to flip the middle finger at the past 25 years of the political establishment (both GOP and Dem) status quo.

You're absolutely correct about a good chunk of America the giving the middle finger t the establishment, but I don't think it matters whether or not the candidate is crazy or not, as long as he is seen as anti establishment. (A candidate can be virulently anti establishment and not be crazy (not saying whether this applies to Moore or not)). This was simply about Moore being seen as anti establishment, Strange being seen as establishment. Like you alluded to, people, esp those who vote in primaries, hate the establishment, status quo candidates.

Doug Jones was a shitty relief pitcher for the Phillies (and others) who blew way too many saves.

Wasn't Jones an all-star, with just two blown saves, in his only outing with the Phillies in 1994? There are been far worse players for the Phillies before and since to have a weird aversion to Doug Jones. May I suggest Steve "E" Jeltz as a start? Or Juan "Ding-Dong" Bell? :thumb:

Fair enough. I was probably thinking of his crappy year in Baltimore in '95. He had a fastball that couldn't break a pane of glass. If his changeup worked, he could get people out.

True dat. His year in Philly was certainly one of his better years. I do recall him sucking eggs in Baltimore. And he pitched a lot of years so I'm sure he threw some clunkers in there. Besides, that '94 year was the year after the Phillies had that magical run in '93 and it was clear early on that '94 was not going to be magical. That and the strike that ended the year makes '94 a very forgettable year anyway.

Mostly agree, but calling Moore "anti-establishment" is way too generous. He's bat shit fucking crazy and I guarantee you there are some serious skeletons in that closet.

Watch him yourself

In this short excerpt, Moore says “homosexual conduct should be illegal” and calls it “immoral” and “detestable.” But the full face-off between Moore and Press is enlightening. Press keeps challenging Moore to explain what portion of the Constitution supports discrimination against gay Americans. Moore counters by contending that it was essentially unconstitutional for judges—including the Supreme Court—to overturn laws against sodomy. At one point, though, Moore notes that “you don’t find morality in the Constitution,” and then he proclaims, “We get our morality from the Holy Bible on which this nation is founded.” He denounces courts for having established a “right” to sodomy.

Of course, Moore goes straight to the bestiality argument. “Do you know,” he asks, “that bestiality—the relationship between man and beast—is prohibited in every state?” Press interrupts to ask if he is comparing homosexuality with bestiality, and Moore says yes: “It’s the same thing…It is a moral precept on which this country is founded.” Apparently, the founders established the United States to protect its citizenry from homosexuality and bestiality.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/14/politics/ ... index.html

Later in the same speech, Moore suggested God was upset at the United States because "we legitimize sodomy" and "legitimize abortion."

GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore has said he doesn't believe Obama is a natural-born citizen
