Virginia elects first transgender to a state legislature.
Also, first two Latinas to the Virginia House

Re: Virginia/New Jersey Elections
Forget the statewide races, the big news in Virginia right now is Democrats possibly flipping the House of Delegates. No one predicted this...at most 5-6 seats were thought to be flippable. It might be 17+ seats right now.

Re: Virginia/New Jersey Elections
I agree, that's the only real news. A Democrat winning the governorship in NJ isn't shocking - it was shocking that the GOP held the governor's mansion there for 8 years - and the same goes for statewide races in VA - Clinton won it by more than 5% in 2016 and even almost broke the 50% mark there. Beating several incumbents (at least 4) in the House of Delagates is newsworthy, though.∞∞∞ wrote:Forget the statewide races, the big news in Virginia right now is Democrats possibly flipping the House of Delegates. Still a year left until the midterms, but those that dismissed the Georgia 6 special election results can't do it now.
The GOP will be kicking into the wind for 2018 unless things change.

Congress is pretty dead set on getting absolutely nothing done. Going to be fun seeing conks sell the "we did absolutely nothing with majorities in Congress, but vote for us anyways" line to voters in 2018. Good luck with that. Only saving grace will be if the economy is still crushing it, then maybe that cushions the blow. Should be interesting.

Looks like that’s what the new Governor of NJ wants to do. Second coming of Jon Corzine, right down to the Goldman Sachs pedigree.BDKJMU wrote:So I take it the donks will want to increase spending and raise taxes in VA and NJ?

And that probably means more obnoxious NJ azzholes moving to DE.

And Drumpf is already saying that the reason Gillespie lost in VA is that Gillespie didn’t worship the POTUS.

Yeah, NJ is screwed no matter what. And if Trump's tax plan goes through the exodus from Jersey could become epic.Ivytalk wrote:Looks like that’s what the new Governor of NJ wants to do. Hard to say if this election means anything. Blue states got much more blue.

Healthcare in VA is the big ticket item that Republicans have until now successfully blocked - with the VA GA and the Gov being held by the Dems this will likely change. Initial funding of course comes from the federal govt, but taxes will go up when the costs shift to the states in the coming years.BDKJMU wrote:So I take it the donks will want to increase spending and raise taxes in VA and NJ?

Re: Virginia/New Jersey Elections
What is nice for the Democrats is not just that they won big, but who won and their platforms, and across the state:
1) The sponsor of Virginia's anti-trans bathroom bill was beaten by a transgender woman
2) Pro-NRA Republicans were defeated by Democrats running on gun control measures
3) In New Jersey, a GOP legislator who mocked the Woman's march was beaten by a 32-year old woman who was inspired to run after his sexist comments
4) Democratic candidates were young, many female, and from all races
5) Democrats took two seats in Georgia that were in districts so heavily Republican no Democrat contested them in the last election
6) Refugees won seats in Virginia, and the Mayorship of Helena Montana
7) Maine voters approved Medicaid expansion overwhelmingly, a measure that Trump clone LePage had vetoed 5 times.
8) Washington had a seat flipped, giving control of the state senate to the Dems
9) Seats were flipped in every state that had elections - mostly in districts that Trump won.
10) Northam had an F rating from the NRA. Still won huge.

Helena elected its first black mayor yesterday. I haven't researched it but I don't think I need to to safely say it's the first one in the state's history.
