The Trump administration unveiled a controversial plan Thursday to permit drilling in all U.S. continental shelf waters, including protected areas of the Arctic and the Atlantic, where oil and gas exploration is opposed by governors from New Jersey to Florida, nearly a dozen attorneys general, more than 100 U.S. lawmakers and the Defense Department.

More than 3 billion barrels of oil is recoverable on the outer continental shelf, along with more than 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to the Interior Department, which announced the plan. States stand to gain royalties from extraction of these natural resources, and drilling could create hundreds of jobs.

But the plan faces a wave of bipartisan state opposition, led in part by Republican Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland, who has said: “I’m not in favor of offshore drilling.” A catastrophe on the scale of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil leak in 2010 would be disastrous for one of the state’s most precious resources, the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

I didn't realize that Lake Mead counted as coastal. It is a big lake, though.

California can keep them.

Arizona just wants Rocky Point.

I'd prefer that they keep the drilling in the red states, like California:

Let each state decide just like in the Gulf. FL has said no, Texas & Louisiana have said yes.

You know I'm in favor of the concept but I think it has to be done by convincing States that it's OK. This is not a good move politically.

BTW I'll say again that the Deepwater Horizon thing in itself wasn't all THAT big a a deal. Because of my job I had to do a lot of work associated with assessing the effects and it really wasn't that much. A lot more harm was caused by perception and how people responded than by the event itself. You can believe that or not but it's true.

No oil drilling off Florida coast, Trump administration says

The White House will not allow companies to drill for oil off the coast of Florida, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said Tuesday after a brief meeting with the state's governor.

The change of course comes five days after Zinke announced the offshore drilling plan and highlights the political importance of Florida, where President Donald Trump narrowly won the state's 29 electoral votes in the 2016 election and has encouraged Gov. Rick Scott to run for Senate.

Zinke met with Scott at the Tallahassee airport before announcing that waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean would be "off the table" for drilling.

Zinke announced plans last week to greatly expand offshore oil drilling from the Atlantic to the Arctic and Pacific oceans, including several possible drilling operations off Florida, where drilling is now blocked. The plan was immediately met with bipartisan opposition on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Scott, who is expected to run for Senate later this year, came out against the Trump administration plan when it was first announced, saying his top priority is to ensure that Florida's natural resources are protected.......”

If only all states had a Mar-a-Lago they'd be safe.

Interesting that the criteria given by Stinke applies moreso to California, but no drilling ban there.

Seriously, Trump is trying to run a banana republic. Too bad the GOP and it's sheeple are too stupid to recognize the damage he is doing to the USA.

How the hell is that backpedaling?

Did you think I was praising the move? It's one of the most Presidential things Trump has done since he's been in office (aside from not releasing his taxes)
