TMan said that a topic this divisive needs it's own thread so here it is ...

IMO, oil is our opium. We're addicted to it and it makes us vulnerable to more than just the Chinese. We need to obtain the oil. We can drill for some of it on our own soil but we must also procure it from other countries many of which are unstable and/or unfriendly. We are vulnerable in both drilling for and shipping the oil. In addition, the money we pay other countries for oil enriches governments and individuals that may be threatened by our systems (democratic and economic) and way of life. Some of them use these profits to fund either directly (individuals helping Al Qaeda) or indirectly (governments funding madrasahs teaching radical forms of islam in the Middle East, South Asia, Indonesia, and Europe) our "enemies" in the "war on terror".

What say you?

I agree.

Also, as populations continue to increase there will be additional strains from other natural resources especially water rights.

I consider water rights, and useable water to be one of hte biggest problems we will face.

Definitely....will be more of an issue than oil probably during our lifetimes. Improper and ill-conceived water projects have increased the strain on this natural resource in this country alon, not to mention Nile Delta, lack of a Colorado River in Mexico, etc.

Most important of all, imo. Everything else is details. Best of all, it would pay for itself quickly through vastly reduced defense spending. Biggest loser? Israel. Absent our need for mid-east oil, Israel is a side show.

water and energy... more important to national security than anything else.
