Good thing we’re saving money on NASA by contracting out to the private sector!
What’s that?
Oops:
It appears the Zuma did not make it into orbit. Staff from the Senate and House have reportedly been briefed on the failure of the mission. According to the Wall Street Journal, industry officials have estimated Zuma cost billions of dollars.

I'm good with the private-public partnerships, although I think NASA should be given more funding to continue doing its own thing. I'll wait to see what the results of the investigation are, but failures are bound to occur with such complicated systems...no matter if it's a private enterprise or a public agency.
As long as SpaceX remedies the situation, monetarily or otherwise, I simply chalk this up to the risks involved.

Stop shitting on my Elon Musk bashing!
Sure, it could have been Northrop’s fault, but I choose to blame SpaceX.

But will AZ point out to all of us that "Billions of dollars" is so meaningless it's like a rounding error...

The biggest corporate welfare queen of all time, Elon Musk.
I might get called anti-capitalist by GATW and kalm again, but this space privatization thing isn't working (like I said it wouldn't). Thanks, 0bama, that's one thing that shouldn't be privatized.
NASA figured out how to competently launch satellites decades ago.

Lockheed Martin
Boeing
Raytheon
General Dynamics
Northrop Grumman
SpaceX isn't even on the Welfare queen depth chart
maybe if they stick around another 40 years they can crack the top 5
And if a few failed launches decides the fate of a contractor
Why are we still trying to build these...?
Last time I checked a team of monkies could build a boat

Elon Musk? Hardly. Try the alphabet companies of Northern Virginia.

Those are good stewards of public monies. They don't have any flops.

He may not win in terms of dollar amount, but he probably wins in terms of getting governments to subsidize snake-oil solutions. Most of those companies you mentioned could survive without a lot of their defense contracts (though they'd have to downsize), but Tesla is pretty much single-handedly propped up by government subsidies.
And a lot of these companies do R&D, and there's the understanding that sometimes things won't work. Yet Elon Musk gets praised for innovations NASA pioneered decades ago (a reusable spacecraft! wow! Musk is a genius!)
And don't even get me started on that laughable hyperloop idea. But it's only a matter of time before Hyperloop company is also feeding at the government trough.

I wonder how many things you rely on today were "snake oil solutions" long ago.

LOL @ the "small gov" conks claiming privatization isn't the answer wrt NASA, and a derelict program like NASA should continue to be propped up by taxpayers.
Oh and you know those shuttles that kept blowing up in entry/reentry that led to us having to rely on the Russian (oh noes) for launches...yeah...NASA...
Shit happens, I'm sure all those abc defense contractors have plenty of things go wrong...all at taxpayer expense.
Get gubmint out of the this new era of space race and let the private firms lead in innovation. Common sense.

This.
Just being a government contractor does not make you a welfare queen. However, Elon Musk would not personally be a billionaire 20 times over without him and all his "projects" (SpaceX, SolarCity, Tesla, etc, etc, etc.) sucking at the teat of the US and multiple state governments.

No different than walmart imo. Hate the game, not the player.

It's a fascinating turn of events...
It used to be just Liberals complaining about our Military Industrial Welfare State
but now that Hipsters and alternate power are in the Welfare game all bets are off
as said already:

Trust me, it's just as fascinating to see Liberals give a free pass and turn a blind eye to the Hipsters and "green energy" pirates. Hypocrisy certainly has no bounds.

I've said many times here that I feel like R&D is something that you can't leave exclusively to the private sector because some of it is just too difficult and expensive. If you want to take away my small-govt conk card, fine, but that's my take on it.
On a non-space related note, I see where Pfizer is basically going to get out of Alzheimer's research.

So gubmint drives R&D, not demand from the free market?

Except when it comes to feeding the poor or providing healthcare to kids - then we can't afford billions
