you'll immediately know what I'm talking about
That's where Houston is right now

Outlandish prosperity directly adjacent to abject poverty for mile after mile
I'm not talking about a neighborhood (or two) it's Rio and Tegu in Texas
My jaw hung loosely hinged for miles



We are in the final phase my friends... I died a little bit today as the sun shone brightly
brand new rental car, music playing A/C on with the windows down
high end business meetings business absolutely booming
Life on the everlasting up-swing

Staggering and absolute poverty across the freeway from Stone built Mansions with 25 meter pools
Just like Brazil Honduras Mexico

Interesting observation.

We had a stop in Caracas while on a cruise in the 90's and it was exactly the same way. There was a waste disposal strike going on and garbage was literally flowing down the hillsides. Street corners were occupied by policia with machine guns or they rode around on crotch rockets with guns strapped to their back weaving in and out of traffic. We then drove through one of the nice neighborhoods with an awesome looking golf course and manicured lawns etc. It was suburban bliss. According to the cruise information, Venezuela was still at that time the wealthiest country in South America.

I think was before Chavez and the commies took over too.

It was. And, it was the most well-educated. Now it has been surpassed by Colombia (also a very well educated population) and Chile.

Look, I went to HS in Houston. It has no zoning and has always been clogged and sprawly. I go back every few years for reunions. It’s always been a boom-or-bust type of place. And yes, there are some very poor areas...but not in the middlle of River Oaks or Tanglewood.

Don't ever comeback to Baltimore Cleets. There is the Inner Harbor, Canton, Federal Hill, Fells Point and Roland Park and then the rest is boarded up vacant rowhouses. Not just an occasional one either. Like blocks upon blocks of boarded up or razed rowhouses. It's pitiful.

Substitute "every WWII-era industrial boom town that was disemboweled by white flight in the 60s" for "Gary IN" or "Baltimore" and it's all the same.

Detroit, Camden, Chester, Wilmington, Toledo, East St Louis, etc etc. There are a zillion shitholes in this country.

I think the distinction Cleets is trying to make is that all of those places stopped trying by the mid 70s. Houston probably tried to hang on for a few more decades.

I don't like Houston. In fact I am pleased this weekend as my daughter and her husband wanted to go see some kind of concert thing with the choice being between Houston and Pensacola and they went to Pensacola. They're at a hotel in Pensacola as I type. I know I'd MUCH rather go to Pensacola and I feel a lot better about my daughter being there than her being in Houston.

But Houston metro area DOES produce a lot of football players. Talk about a rich recruiting area!

There is a construction/building renovation company that does entire blocks. Its called Green Door. Every renovated rowhouse has a kelly green door. Those blocks are being bought up by people. So, true. The whole area heading down to Fort McHenry has been done along with a new subdivision of luxury rowhouse/townhouses.

That would be my next bet for an established good neighbor hood.
