Interesting and of course there's precedent as it's "a part of our national anthem". Question...would they be ok if someday in a school district or a state it was replaced with "Allahu Akbar"? Or how about "In Satan we trust"?

A bill requiring Tennessee schools to prominently display the national "In God We Trust" motto is headed to the governor for his signature.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Susan Lynn, R-Mt. Juliet, overwhelmingly passed the state House on Monday with 81 of the 99 members voting in favor of it. Before the vote, the Republican lawmaker spoke from the House floor about the prominence of the phrase.

"Our national motto is on our money. It's on our license plates. It's part of our national anthem," Lynn said. "Our national motto and founding documents are the cornerstone of freedom and we should teach our children about these things."

Basically the same meaning, just prefer the English version.

Where is it in our national anthem? I think I missed that part. Is it in the unsung verses?

Not at all. God has many meanings and forms in America, Thanks to Freedom of Religion. Many have nothing to do with Christianity.

No one knows there are four verses of the Star Spangled Banner poem, which is where the "In God We Trust" is located. The national anthem is the first verse, it's long enough and no one has ever heard the other three verses sung.

As for this particular item, I see no reason for schools to have to spend more money throwing up mandated mottos because the state legislature thought it was a good idea. It's like how we end up with kids having to waste time learning about the state bird of Tennessee (they have two, actually, the mockingbird and the bobwhite quail) and the state tree of Tennessee (the tulip poplar btw). I mean, we need Jeopardy categories, sure, but why waste the little time schools have now on crap like this?

I could make a case that for many kids, knowledge of the mockingbird, bobwhite quail, and tulip poplar are as important as anything else they'll learn in school. But that's a whole other debate.

Fun fact, but the first US coin (Birch Cent) has the motto, "Liberty, Parent of Science & Industry."

And it was designed by Washington/Jefferson in 1792, but all we get nowadays is "In God We Trust" thanks to the 50's freak out of differentiating America from those godless communists.

Tulip poplars suck when next to driveways, decks, houses, etc. Weak-ass trees that drop shit all the time.

Yeah, poplars in general are not dense-wooded trees. Branches break off all the time. They are even a low choice of firewood because they burn too quickly.

My kid’s elementary school had a garden the kids worked in and they took trips to Turnbull NWR to explore and learn about native plants and animals. Those are the kind of classrooms and learning we need more of.

Reading, writing, and math are pretty important too. I'm sure they can all be worked in if we try.

This doesn't really bother me...
It is exactly the opposite type of reasoning used to build this nation
and it flies in the face of the concept of our Republic for which it stands

But when people get scared they go backwards
and I am not surprised Tennessee is scared of the rest of big scary America

I think you're missing the part about clinging to their guns and religion, gotta throw that in there too.

Oh, and speaking of guns, Tennessee actually has a state gun - the Barrett M82/M107. I had no idea. Thank goodness they passed that bit of legislation. I haven't looked, would be fascinated to know how many states have an official state gun.

I'd be happy if they came out being able to balance a checkbook, understand how personal credit works, and were able to change a flat tire and their own oil.

How to:
Create a monthly budget
Balance a bank account
Understanding Credit
Living within your means (see creating a monthly budget)



Bonus points:
Basic Plumbing and water fixtures
Basic Electrical and home electrical fixtures
Basic Automotive care and maintenance

Nobody needs to learn about the French Revolution if they can't change a tire first...

Tulip poplars aren't actually poplars (or tulips), they are in the magnolia family.

Barretts are made in Christiana, TN.

Btw, a whole bunch of guns are made in the deep blue states of CT (Colt), MA (S&W, Springfield), and NH (Sig Sauer). Somehow I doubt they'll pass state gun legislation.

Your best hope would be SC (FNH makes the M-16, M-4, M-240, and M-249 in Columbia) or GA (Glocks made in Smyrna).
