New Seattle Business Tax

So what is going on with this tax? Let's hear from our resident PNW's on how they view this.

The Seattle City Council on Monday passed a plan to tax businesses making at least $20 million in gross revenues about $275 per full-time worker each year. That “head tax” is estimated to raise about $48 million -- which authorities are marking for housing and homeless services.

It's actually pretty funny
When you have virtually zero unemployment
and everybody basically makes $70K or better, usually much better
and housing prices have effectively doubled in the last 36 months

The city council denies the reasons for the tax other than "Homeless issues"
but there's also a little bit of... SLOW DOWN MOTHER FUCKERS

Seattle is not booming, it's EXPLODING
and the shortage of available apartments and condos and homes is a major problem

In downtown Redmond 900 sq ft apartment is $2200 and UP
Two bedroom 1200 sq feet $2700 if you're lucky $3200 all day long

It's out of control

Nobody seems to know what to do
They raised the property tax 40% last year just to chase some more people away and that didn't work
They've put tolls in the carpool lane - yeah that's not a typo
The boat tax or water entry or whatever they call it "biological impact tax"
as well as a Slip Tax have gone up 300% and 400% respectively in 24 months
Tax tax tax... More taxes hurry

Hilariously
SpaceX moved in around 2015 and purchased some office space and hire 60 people... la-dee-dah
Last month they purchased 90,000 square feet in Redmond and look to hire a few thousand more

The whole things has just gone nuts frankly and over taxing doesn't seem to do anything
and everybody is hiring...

Is there a lot of building (houses, businesses, etc?) going on or just a lot of reuse of existing space? If people are building, part of the planning process could be to make them also build the things that are needed - pay for the infrastructure improvements, and even pay for construction of affordable housing or tiers of housing at various levels. Granted, hard to do when things are moving very quickly, but you don't want to become Houston by not having a larger plan in place in terms of zoning.

That's the thing - is the city really the best placed entity to do something of good with that money to alleviate the problems they have? Cities aren't the best at actually building housing - zoning yes, actual construction, not so much.

Mostly they just build fancy grade schools and high schools - and I mean FANCY
They remodel the parks and the forest walks and bike lanes and bike trails

They are adding a pubic transit train system to the tune of billions and billions
so the service people have a way of getting into the city and growth areas
because the commute from south of Renton to Seattle (15 miles for example) is now an hour plus

So basically waiters and bar tenders and office cleaners now all make about $50k to 70k
or they quit and walk across the street and get that... It's INSANITY

That's crazy. I've mentioned my friends in San Fran that spend $3k/month on a 1 bedroom condo. And they have to be pulling in between $250-$300k as architects.

Honest question - has Seattle tried to deny business licenses? I know that's crazy but if you're trying to chase away people and slow development - that's one way to go about it.

But wait, I thought the $15/hour minimum wage was going to make Seattle a ghost town?

Nope. The market demands a higher wage than $15/hr there apparently.

I wonder how many teens in Seattle living at home with mom and dad seeking their 1st no/low skill job are finding work at $15 an hour..

I doubt any of us here as teens made even close to $15 an hour..

My first job was as a convenience store clerk near my house when I was 15. $3.35/hr.

Minimum wage is becoming irrelevant in Seattle...
It's just whatever amount it takes to keep people on staff

Example:
Sears is run out of Chicago
and corporate can't figure out what to do so they're closing all 4 stores in Western Washington
Nobody will work for minimum wage at Sears apparently and Chicago won't budge much

The sign in the window in Redmond for years said Hiring: $15 an Hr and the sign never came down
Eventually I guess they just gave up

Indeed!

I worked at Wing Point CC for a couple of summers back in the 80’s. We literally had a member named Richard Person.

But we have a Kingston address and are not on the island just like the new ferry. (You’re geography is as good as Andy’s)

We’re more common seafaring type folk, mostly fishmongers and loggers. It’s like the difference between Eastern Washington and Western Washington in general...salt of the earth stoics vs the more cunty types....
