Obamas to renovate White House with own money, turn down $100K from Congress

WASHINGTON - President Obama is finally taking his own advice when he says all Americans need to sacrifice during these tough times.

After repeated questioning from the White House press corps, the First Couple has decided to pass up the $100,000 that Congress has long allotted to every incoming President to renovate the White House to his taste.

Instead, the Obamas, who are worth millions, will pay to overhaul the White House residence from their own pockets, said Camille Johnston, First Lady Michelle Obama's communications director.

"The Obamas have determined now is not the time to use taxpayer funds and they will not be accepting any donations," Johnston said.

They also recently forked over a few thousand dollars of their own to pay for a South Lawn swing set for daughters Malia and Sasha.

The Obamas have hired pricey Hollywood decorator Michael S. Smith to redesign the interior of the Executive Mansion.

Check Lowe's, etc. About the price anyone would pay for more than a basic set.

The swing set I had was a slide, 2 swings, monkey bars, and a bar trapeze that was like 4 feed off the ground

You could also ride your bike down to the park... without the Secret Service.

the White House is like a velvet prison for kids... you really aren't allowed to have a normal childhood...

a couple thousand on a small swingset/play area seems to me to be a helpful solution to remedy the fact that they don't get to "just go ride bikes" or "go down to the park and play"

I couldn't ride my bike to the park...my town was full of illegals and "hud" housing (dirt cheap rent for illegals and drug people...the low rent still got income for the landlord.) The park was in that part of town, thus I wasn't allowed to go there. Monthly drug busts, assualt cases, weapons charges, etc...


a lot tougher place than the Obama's will ever know....and this was a town of under one thousand.

It was from the early 80's, was starting to rust and was held into the ground by digging coffee can size holes, putting a coffee can in the holes, putting the poles in the holes then filling the cans with cement....swing fast or high enough and the fucker started coming out of the ground.

It's much nicer now that most of the illegals and druggies are gone...or at least they hide more than they did. However, from 1990-2001 (age 2-13 for me) there were really really creepy assholes that parents didn't want us around.

Kudos to Obama. Wonder if he'll give it a new paint job?

Personally, I'd like to see the white house and the capitol torn down and completely rebuilt. That ancient Rome sh@t is just ugly. Make them more modern looking.

No, but what he DID help buy was the time and energy spent by an Obama staffer to "research" swingsets, FLY to the factory (on our dime) and personally design the swingset.

And as far as Obama spending his own money to "renovate" the White House, why in the FCUK does every president have to redesign the thing? Course, since he's going to try to get the 2-term limit appealed, he's obviously planning on spending a lot more than 8 years there...

Where did you hear he was going to do away with term limits?
