You have to stop and ask yourself why it is none of our adult presidents were able to get this done. This is really long overdue. You have to give the goofball credit where it's due.
Trump's predecessor passed a health care bill that kills an entire forest every time it's printed on paper and this wasn't in it.

Um...
For the same reason people drive to Canada to get simple heart medication at 92% less cost..?
For the same reason we can't seem to fix our healthcare system..?
The guy from Texas wrote the right to try thing... Maybe we should ask him..?
It is confusing why it took this specific version to pass
Big Pharma loves it because the expense is insane !!!
Yes please - $1500 a pill and $20,000 an injection WHEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Generally, I'm on board.
Haven't really read up on it, though.
I assume the "right" is granted only if you can afford it or have health insurance willing to bear the cost?

Exactly why is this a boon to pharma companies now but wouldn't have been 5, 10, or 20 years ago? The process of drug approval has always been long and vigorous and there's always been promising drugs in early-phase trials while people with terminal conditions can't get them.
Jelly might be right that most people won't be able to get these drugs unless they can pay a whole lot of money, but if I'm looking at this from the perspective of a pharmaceutical company, I want the drug approval process expedited by getting more data on human subjects quickly.

I do agree with right to try but it's not a matter of getting as far as we can get with animal models. When it comes to making claims about the efficacy of drugs there is always the opportunity to conduct clinical trials with human beings.
I think the animal model thing comes in when we are going the other way. Like for instance saying smoking causes cancer. We cant' ethically conduct a controlled experiment to address that question. So we might do something like try to design a controlled experiment on chimps.
With trying to demonstrate a positive effect there may be studies on animals to start. But it is always possible, in the end, to conduct clinical trials on human beings.

BTW I think the individual and/or the individual's guardians should be free to try any treatment they want to try. The Laetrile thing for instance. To me the focus should be on making claims. If there is a drug there should be no claim that it will cure a disease unless it's been through the FDA process for validating its effectiveness. If someone wants to try it anyway if it hasn't been through the validation process they should be free to do so.

You just can’t help yourself. 3 consecutive posts in 10 minutes. Go to the blackboard and write “Trump is the greatest President ever” 100 times. And get help for that OCD.

Well our President already announced several times that he had a new Healthcare Plan
and it was great, we're going to love it... it'll be the best in the world
and then he announced that again (he doubled down on that claim)
We should probably just adopt his program. don't you think..?
After all we'll love it, it's the best in the world

I have a better plan than that
No ACA.

Yeah, Conks couldn't even pass a "skinny" repeal.
Best of luck.

Or put forward a better plan. Though, I know that's hard for Conks these days.

Here's a good article on the drug approval process and "Right to Try" legislation.

No ACA. Full stop. That’s what the period means.

But with full control of the house and senate and the Presidents "Repeal Obama" Care chant
they didn't do it..? Why..?
Seriously... The Republicans have been talking repeal for 36 months
The opportunity arrived... and *crickets

Big Pharma will love this - human guinea pigs that waive all liability!!
If the therapy works, $$$$$$$ for Big Pharma. If the patient dies, oh well, they were gonna kick the bucket anyway.

More harm than good?
Ultimately, we believe right to try gives the Trump administration a political win on a popular public policy but will do little to change the status quo for terminally ill patients. Some opponents say, if anything, it could give terminally ill patients false hope for new access to drugs they already can obtain through existing FDA policy.
Even if right to try does simplify federal regulation, patients must still convince a reticent pharmaceutical industry to provide drugs outside of trials, and patients must still bear the costs for these experimental treatments, which is out of reach for almost all Americans.
The right to try legislation will score the president and members on both sides of the aisle in Congress points, but ultimately it will change little for terminally ill patients and their families.
In other words, nothing will really change, only benefits the wealthy, and Trump gets to act like he is doing something.
