‘Change the rules’? You mean like when Reid put forth the nuclear option?

Pwns wrote: Fri Sep 18, 2020 7:32 pm Well, McConnell couldn't get rid of Trump by convicting him in the senate without pissing off the base, but he can let Trump douse himself with gasoline by pushing a nominee through while "owning the libs". Meanwhile, his senate seat is safe.

He and Joe Biden are the only winners here.
If Trump nominated someone who was confirmed before the election, the left will go absolutely batshit crazy, rioting all over the country. The left is already blowing up the twitterverse with threats of that. That wouldn't be Trump dousing himself with gasoline, but more like the left doing it to themselves (and Biden). Some examples from lefty writers/pundits:

I somewhat agree. On one hand, there's a legitimate fear Roe v. Wade can be overturned now, and women should be worried about that...especially if McConnell rams a Trump nominee through. On the other hand, I've never lived under anything but a conservative court, so only thing that'll change is that SCOTUS will shift even more ideologically to the right.

Of course, the Legislative branch does have ways to deal with it, passing laws being #1 and if necessary, court packing.

I'm a white, heterosexual male so no social issue really effects me at a personal level, but I can recognize the fear women, minorities, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQ community may have (among others). It's definitely warranted.

This.

RBG was an excellent justice and member of the Supreme Court. The Court and the country are lesser places without her. Hopefully, we have justices who can fill her (and Scalia's) robes in the pipeline.
Agreed. The amount of good she's done is immeasurable. She dedicated an entire life to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans, and while I'm not one to dwell on the death of individuals I don't know, she's certainly an American to honor. Her and Scalia reminded us you can have fundamental disagreements and still be friends and cordial colleagues, a lesson we all need nowadays.

I feel bad that her death is about to be overshadowed by a complete sh*t show, but such is life.

Gotta hand it to 2020 though...definitely a year for the ages. The last quarter is gonna be fun.

If she had retired during the Obama Administration, like some had suggested, it would have guaranteed a liberal replacement.

Now Conk POTUS, Conk Senate in an election year. Yuge difference.
And thank you Harry Reid.
It is. It just happens to coincide with your political leanings. Nobody is shocked that you are a flip flopping hypocrite on this.

but it isn’t. You’re only saying that because the parties are the same and they align with you.

Trump has the responsibility to nominate and the Senate to confirm. But the Republicans already said we can’t do this in an election year. What’s the problem? Oh yea - they wanted to wait for a Republican POTUS. It’s hypocritical. It’s situational ethics. It’s crap

What a bigot. :ohno:
Katie Couric asked Ginsburg about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick—who sparked a broader movement among athletes when he decided to start taking a knee in protest during the national anthem—in an interview released on Monday. The justice answered bluntly: “I think it’s really dumb.” Ginsburg elaborated that she wouldn’t “arrest them for doing it,” but went on to call the protest “disrespectful,” “ridiculous,” “offensive,” and “arrogant.” She also compared the action to burning an American flag.

It hasn't worked for 230+ years.

And that's beside the point anyways. The entire system works on each branch interpreting the Constitution however it wants, and battling the interpretations of the other branches. If Congress calculates that it's able to pack the court without major backlash from voters, it should certainly do it. And then the voters can decide if the reps made the right calculation or not.

When Obama was President, McConnell decided to exert the power of the Legislature over the Executive. There's no reason a future Congress couldn't similarly exert its power over the Judicial branch. It's up to the other two to stop them.
You can certainly tell who went to a school that didn't teach civics. I'm not going to waste my time and try to teach you something that you should have learned in high school, but the judiciary is the ONLY branch that interprets the Constitution.

Of course it is. If it's not abolishing the Electoral College or eliminating the filibuster or now threatening to pack the courts, our system of government must be morphed into some monster which ensures that Donks are in total control.

No. I'm saying the notion that you can't confirm a justice in an election year if the same party controls the White House and the Senate is hogwash.
