If you haven't heard about the rising costs of college and the danger of taking out too much money to pay for college then it's almost a self-fulfilling issue. Why people continue to make these mistakes is certainly a question, but these folks are not being hoodwinked and haven't been for awhile now. Pick a college that's affordable, study a major with a goal of one day being employed in a decent job, and go from there.
There's a sense of entitlement out there that if I'm accepted to a $60k/yr school, then by God I should get to go there. Never mind that I have no money, my parents have no money, and I'd have to go $300,000 in debt to get a degree from there. And this flawed mindset is compounded by the fact that many, many kids attending college have no clue what they're going to do with the degree they get once (and if) they graduate, or get a degree that seems "fun" with no clue as to the type or job (or pay) they can demand once they're done. Hence the # of education majors who subsequently bitch incessantly about the pay teachers get.
True story: My wife (a journalist by trade) worked with a girl who went to Harvard. HARVARD. And got a journalism degree to go make $25,000 per year. Never mind there's 20 other schools that have award-winning, nationally recognized journalism programs at 1/4 or 1/5 the price....
